Default What is a focus RS gearbox worth?

Need a bit of help before offering someone some money for one.

I know of someone breaking a focus RS and have said I'm interested in the 'box but he's come back and said what would I offer for it. Now obviously in an ideal world he's acceptn £50 and a bag of jelly babies but I dont see that happening to be honest

I saw one go....... well got out bid on one on ebay last week that went for £230, but dont know whether thats an average price or a fluke low price.

Anyone any idea what the second hand value of these boxes is?

this is a box on its own, not sure yet if I want the drive shafts as its going in an non RS focus and probably only going to be running about 300bhp so standard 2.0 ones should probably suffice.

Might offer the guy £300 and see what he says

Really? I thought the 5 speeder was used in the FRS as it's stronger also? I bloody hope so as I'm already just over 330lb/ft! And the boys running 380BHP have yet to run into box problems.

always offer say £50 less than what you think it worth/expect to pay for it!

that way if he says yes you have saved a load of cash and if he says no then you can always go up in the offer or ask him how much he thinks after your starting offer!

Well theres no need to wink lol it doesnt alter the facts, ask gearboxman if you like. The St170 getrag unit is rated as handling more torque (330lbft) than the RS MTX75. I dont care, i dont use either , i also dont like the shift on the st170 box but it is stronger. its also used in the mini cooper s/works cooper s

i'll wink when i like thanks

I know what the facts are, and i know the ST box has a higher rating but having owned both cars with each box in i am saying as the driver the RS box feels like its the stronger box to me.

Oh and the ST ratios are all wrong for a Turbo car. The getrag box is designed for the power band of a NA car otherwise ford would have used it in the FRS wouldnt they

What car do you drive matt ??

What does my car have to do with it unless you somehow think knowledge is directly proportional to the rrp of the car you drive?

I extensively researched the gearboxes when i was looking at a zetec turbo project for my fiesta. This is still something i'm thinking about but to be honest i'm happier spending on my house at the moment.
If u see i have totally agreed about which box feels better. Your wink implied that as you have had both you knew best, i have driven both also and despite what feels nicer you cant argue with mechanical fact

re your car, Sorry i thought you were going to say you own both a ST170 and a FRS and you think the ST170 box is better because its a higher rating?

To me the correct gear ratios and the feel of the box is more important that what box has the higer rating on paper

Totally agree about feel as long as it takes what you give it then the shift quality is all that matters. I wish i could keep my IB5 if i were to go ahead with it, it has a sweet shift!

yeah would also love to keep the IB5 box when I go turbo, but by all accounts it doesnt like a lot of torque and tends to fall apart

The other problem with the ST box.... well if fitting it to a focus anyway, is the gearbox take off for the speedo is different to the take-offs for all the other focus boxes, which means having to swap the clocks and everything too I'm told.
