What do you all think ???
I havent had a GOOD honest saff cossie in for sale for about 4 months
Due to the fact that everyone i have been to look at is total and utter SHIT and the owner wants 4.5k for it , and when you get there having been told its in very good condition , dont smoke or rattle and interior is in very goos con , only to find the exact opopsite
and the car is fit for breaking only .
IMO , saffs must be getting hard to find in GOOD CONDITION and this can only mean that the value of a good example must and will go up
Good news for those FEW who own good examples of this now very rare car
And to all those who are trying to sell shitters and saying there nice cars , get to specsavers and stopp kidding yourself that you have a nice car

need some spare cash .. but dont want to sell it

i get these silly ideas every now and again

know exactley what you mean mate! we looked at a few while hunting for traceys one.round 5k 5.5k and they were all shit boxes, with disillussioned owners!
in the end we bought my mates one who only decided to sell it an hour before i txt him asking if he knew of any. we paid 6k for it in magenta and its worth every penny.clean and very well looked after.a credit to dave its former owner.
good news on us for the prices though, not that i will sell mine cos im starting to spend a stack on it.
and its silver,even more rare.

I think mines in good condition
There are a few bits here and there that need touching up so to speak, but apart from that shes a sound car.
I know i will have to sell her when we get a house etc but it will defo break my heart to let her go
We looked at a Moonstone Blue before i found mine, and was minging, had an full respray with overspray everywhere, also sounded rough.

Well if you have the budget (Ł10k), I know where there is a MINT (27,017 miles) 2wd
.
AND it is a rare radient red car with raven leather (Registered 09-10-1989 - G). Standard bar stainless-steel exhaust, original purchase receipt - only four owners. Full Ford history, bla-bla - comes wth original wheels with original Dunlop D40s fitted, and a set of refurbed 4x4 wheels with Bridgestones that are used for normal driving (yes it could be a concourse car

I must prequel my comments by stating that I have been a Sapph cossie owner for 10 years, and I still love mine but.....
If I am totally honest, the standard car by modern standards was not great. It is still only a sierra, which means that it has a tendancy towards understeer, they rust like crazy, and the fold easily in slight accidents. I mean, be honest, when was the last time you saw a Sierra that didnt look just a little cross-eyed!
It was not their ability as a standard car that sold it to most of us. It was their potential. As such, most good cars get modified to fulfil that potential.
Here is where the problem becomes worse. People buy mint cars, (after all, who wants to start with a ratty car?) tune them, run them, and then when it is time to move on, they break them and sell the parts individually, becuase the price of parts justifies it. This is the only way to realise the maximum costs.
I always had this plan in the back of my head that if I ever sold my Cossie that I would revert it to standard form and sell it. In my case, mine has received too much rust treatment over the years etc etc, and as such I finally came to the conclusion that the only way she would leave the garage would be in pieces (if ever!)
Lastly, if you really want to spend 10k on a standard mint cossie, would you really choose a sapphire? If you would, then you are mad.

I think there are still a few good ones about, but the chances of most of those owners parting with them are slim to non as they are fully appreciated for what they are, which is why you only ever see the shit boxes for sale.
I was lucky with the one I had, it was only the 2nd one I looked at but it wasn't advertised for sale, a friend knew the bloke treated it like a child but had been toying with the idea of letting it go (wife pressures lol).
2 owners, standard engine, in fact standard car as it came from the factory, garaged all its life, only mark on it was a small scuff on the rear bumper - after hard bartering it cost 5800.
All it took was waving a bit of cash in front of him (and the wife of course) and I got my hands on it. Thats why I was sooooooo gutted about having to let it go 6 months down the line, cos I know how few and far between getting an owner to part with a decent one is

mine was the first one i saw, but i like to think its in good nick.
it all depends on how fussy the seller is, and how honest they are
i havent really noticed the prices rising, but i do know that you do need to pay good money for a nice one
cue all the people going....i would never pay more than 5k blah blah......its worth what you get for it etc.
i looked at two when i was buying mine. one for 8k 1992 saff, and one for 7k (the one i bought).
it just goes to show, you get what you paid for, since buying mine i have had to pay exactly Ł0 on repairs. which has left my money to be spent on making the car mine, and modifieng it to how i want it.
i can honestly say that if my car didnt have a stonechipped bonnet (original paint + 100k dont mix) and a small rust spot (size of a 5p on the rear arch) that it would be perfect

There are still some about, but they are getting harder to find.
I know a few people who have bought them recently and most have had problems either with rot they didnt know was there or major mechanical gremlins.
Helen's certainly seems ok though, and IIRC she didnt pay silly money for it, so i guess there are still a few about

I looked at 2 absolute pieces of shit b4 buying mine..... drove 260 mile round trip to look at "a excellent condition 2wd" (Ł3750) got there and the second I looked at it decided "what a fucking shed".... looked at the 2nd on the way back which was Ł250 more and in worse condition. Saw 1 in Autotrader for Ł4500 and looked at that 1 next day and bought it for Ł4000..... imo an extremely good car for little ŁŁŁ

I paid a good price for mine
She did have a few teething problems when i first got her, misfire was annoying, but once i got her over to Mark's he sorted it in 10 mins pmsl
She will need a re-build at end of the year as she aint really been touched since the Stage 3 in 2002, so she needs a freshen up, which means when the engine is out i can turn bufty and have a good clean up of the engine bay and possible underneath
When looking fro Mine and Pauls we saw some right shitters, thats why i PM'd you and Pete as I was having probs finding anice one, and thought you may have some.
I would class mine as ok, 90k, standard engine wise, couple of things to sort, which i am doing during winter months, but then I only paid 4k, and its only had 4 owners and verifiable millage.
Some of the overpriced shit we looked at was stupid tho,

The boss has talked about selling his 17,000 mile Mallard green 4x4 Saff example lately,as i posted in a previous thread it comes with provenance to confirm it is the last RHD off the line and the only one factory finished in Mallard green.I imagine it must be worth a tidy sum to the right person.
I think that alot of decent Saphs are either being broken for parts or kept under lock and key. I know of a few that the owners just keep in the garage and hardly ever drive. They just cant be bothered to break it and they dont fancy selling it as the car doesn't really cost much to keep and they have a daily runner.
Even if a nice Saph come up for sale, theres a good chance some toerag will get there mits on it and ruin it. Most of the Saphs that come by the shop are very wonky examples owned by younger guys who do everything on the cheap, they just wind up the boost and dont really look after them.

Begs the question as to what a good one is though doesn't it ?
-Interior - what do you expect to find in a good one.
Any car that's done 100K miles or more will have sagging seats/bolsters and worn cloth/leather at the very least.
-Engine - should a "good" one have had a recent rebuild, there probably is no answer to how many miles a cossie should have before being rebuilt, but 125,000miles seems to be an agreed "must be done" sort of ballpark.
-Gearbox - Again, unless rebuilt, it will be sloppy after 15 years of abuse.
-Rust - again, any 15+ year old car used regularly will show some signs of rust, either existing, or, repaired in the past... Unless the car belonged to a bufty bufty.
As an example, mine is pretty much what I would expect of a car with 124,000 miles, the engine is in need of a rebuild, and there is rust on the chassis rails that needs attending to.
So, it's a good one in some respects, it's used daily, there are a few stonechips, etc... but again, all in all, it's fair wear and tear considering the mileage.

They are getting harder to find though! Paul, you shouldnt have sold the black one!
I'll admit, I'll never own a Saff cossie. Purely because of the money involved in getting a good one. I'd spend a bit more buying a 3 door, as they're more of an Icon, but if there was 8k in my back pocket I'd be hunting for an EVO4.
More car for your cash IMHO

There are good ones out there, but what amazes me is that, you would go round to see a car of the autotrader and it would be ropey to say the least with the panel gaps like the grand cannion, then the next week some lunatic had bought it for top money.
I think these people must take steve wonder to go look at it with them

Mine had 100k on it with a recent rebuild and new t34, not rot not even surface rust on the underside, and the interior was as new no wear sagging or anything of the seats. It did have 1 bubble of rust on the bonnet and 1 on the ns rear arch, all original panels and no signs of dodgy body repair
I struggled to sell it and ended up taking Ł4800 for it.

I remember your Sierra i used to see it on the Barry link road quite often.Roger the owner is cutting his collection of cars partly because of redevelopement and partly because the cars just arent getting used,he isn't sure what to do with the Sierra yet but given that it's likely to fetch quite a premium he is considering it.
