As long as its big enough, to make the boost low enough, on the size turbo you want, on the size engine you want, then its good enough.

Turbosmart ProGate is good for the money IMO.

Id have some good ones id sell you, but i forgot to order them, maybe soon, maybe

yeah thats what made me think, warrens is a cheap verison and works perfectly well.

so i wondered are you purely paying for "the name" same in most cases, or did he just get lucky?

Ryan,

it all depends on the application. If its only a street car, a copy of a TiAL or HKS would be sufficent. Just make sure the valve seats properly or else you'll have a leaky watsegate. If your running lots of boost, racing and/or have hight exhaust temps, an 'expensive' one is your only option.

The extra price you pay for is for superior meterials such as inconnel valves.

Intially Turbosmart ones bent valves with high exhuast temps. I've seen this happen first hand at least 3 times and I also heard Brom had problems with his. Having said this, I understand they have rectified this problem and its popularity is a good indicator of the good price/performance you get from Turbosmart.

I've used a TiAL previously and I reckon they would have to be one of the best made wastegates out there. I currently have a 50mm HKS GTII wastegate that I'd highly recommend, but not for your wallet!!

Oh yeah. NEVER buy a 2nd hand wastegate. I bought one from a Sports Sedan (Thundersaloon) a few years back and even though it was one of the same ones used in 90% of WRC cars (cant remember the co. that made them) it was bent like f*ck!

many thanks for the info Vic, very informative.

dont need anywhere near 50mm for my application, i've been told 45mm is the maxium i would ever need.

I have been looking at the tial and turbosmart/pro gate ones

Martin uses and recommends the Tial ones and does them for a very good price (see his website). These are the ones that Harvey also uses .

Ryan, I use & reccomend the Turbo-Smart 48mm unit...............it's worth checking the internal rubber/neoprene diaphram for holes/splits from time-to-time......cheap & easy to replace the diaphram anyway, they are prone to this problem AFAIK.

Phil, did'nt you say a couple of years ago that screamer pipes are dangerous, because they cause the front end of the car to lift up in the air? I'm sure it was you that posted that

...that is correct a VERY famous tuner of a different make car told me this...BUT as you well know it is when you point the exhaust straight down the turbulence can be dangerous when doin a top speed run....so as i said i wanted to do it side exit.it aint in any way dangerous in a top speed way.

clairfication on a 'screamer' please is it simply that the waste gate flows direct to atmo rather than down the exhausts pipe?

presumably if this is the case then its only noisy when the waste gate opens and that would be ok for scrutineering?

pgt9, yes thats correct. things will only get noisy once you hit your desired boost pressure/wategate opens.... drive around like a granny and you'd never know!
