i want to check my engine, as its an ideal time to do any work really as there are no more shows etc, I have some jobs that I want to do, however I would like in general to check the overall state or health of my engine are there any tests I can do or carry out? to see if its tired etc it doesnt smoke except for a small bit of black smoke on start up, and doesnt seem to smoke at all after driving it or lifting off etc if that helps

basically i dont want to get it rebuilt if i dont have to, but will if it needs it, if that makes sense, i have been talking to previous owners of the car and they all say how mega reliable it is etc and it really is a good little car, (not mint but hey I aint bothered about that) but dont want to start replacing things that dont really need it yet and would much rather go through the rest of the car and replace any worn or coroded bits or bits that look like they should be changed on a 16yr old car if that makes sense,
