PC help>been installed with windows copy........
right long story cut short
my pc had a problem, meltdown
gave it to a guy in the paper. Paid like 48 quid for it all to be done.
Before handi had windows xp home edition. I thought he would put that back on as i gave him the ORIGINAL disc.
Got pc back alls ok. He has installed XP proffesional.
I try to get updates and now have been told by a message from Microsoft i have maybe been a vctim of piracy.
I tried the guy, and his number is not in action
So what can i do? Microsoft want 92 to update. Yet i have original home edition. Can i simply upload over the top or not???
Dead worried.

have to wipe hard drive and start from scratch mate .. not really worth trying to load one system ontop of another ... doubt it would let you ..
could try e-mailing microsoft and telling them your story supplying all details of the person that did the work on your behalf .. see what they say

also if he stuck xp pro on with no/invalid key, thats piracy
send him to the dogs
AND tell him you want a refund unless he can supply a PROPER key (which he wont @ £48)
then I'll come and sort it for ya

So you expected a fully legit copy of XP Pro for £48 (plus his time to install it).
Lets face it, he's done you a favour as XP Pro is miles better than XP Home, and who doesn't have a burned copy of XP??? Ys, its illegal, and yes he shouldn't be doing it as a "business", but still....you got some value for money I say!.
Windows Update site will check the key and see its been used lots of times, so you can't download from there. Turn on automatic updates however and they don't check the license key, and will update fine
£48 you got a bargain mate. If your really that disgusted by having a copied version of XP Pro then format it and install XP Home again from your CD (assuming its OK, no scratches and you have the key).
Just my thoughts!

If you have automatic updates on, there was a recent "critical" update that will make you wait 5 seconds before you can log on, and keeps popping up a message in the system tray regarding validation.
If of course you have an invalid key...
