Default Worn turbo oil seals

I have a bad case of smokey overrun on a SAAB turbo (9-5), the turbo is about to come off as I believe the smoke on overrun could be due to worn oil seals on the turbo (amongst other more expensive things... )

Once I have the turbo off, is it easy to check the seals for wear ? Or, should I just get it sent to a specialist to overhaul ?

I don't really want to waste money and time on postage, etc... if it turns out to be something else.

Thank you

to be honest id say take it to specialist to have a look and see what they say
what colour is the smoke? normally if seals have gone in a turbo its white smoke, black smoke is overfuel and blue smoke your is its burning oil
hope that helps buddy

Thanks for the help, I am confused about the colours though

It comes out blue, deffo oil smoke, but, if the turbo's oil seals have gone, I can't see that creating white smoke... water generates white smoke

Or, have I got this completely the wrong way round

Before you take the turbo off inspect the shaft for movement both in and out, and sideways, and check all the hoses for excessive oil build up.
