I have a bad case of smokey overrun on a SAAB turbo (9-5), the turbo is about to come off as I believe the smoke on overrun could be due to worn oil seals on the turbo (amongst other more expensive things...

)
Once I have the turbo off, is it easy to check the seals for wear ? Or, should I just get it sent to a specialist to overhaul ?
I don't really want to waste money and time on postage, etc... if it turns out to be something else.
