Default What to look for when checking for Play in a turbo

Gonna be checking the Turbo tonite on the cossie, just to see if there is any play in the shaft etc, i remeber being told when i was selling my old cossie T3 that there is always a bit of play, but other than that i cant remember which way there should be play etc, can someone tell me what to generally look for with regards to checking for Play in the shaft

If you can pull the shaft in and out slightly it is ok, but if it moves up and down then there is some play in it

there will always be some play as oil pressure sorts it out.
i actually thought in/out was bad and up/down a little was ok

if you can pull it in and out then its on its way out

side to side up and down you will always have a bit of play

i even had it on my brand new t35 a few years ago

In and out is very bad news...

a good turbo will also have minimal movement left/right or up/down.

The reason for play is that the bearings float (hence the pressure oil feed) - and so without the pressure there is some movement.

By some I mean a TINY amount - a natscock - virtually fuck all!!!
