I think when they start to go they usually knock at higher than normal driving revs, maybe under a bit of load too, heard them once on an rst and it was being pushed a little and only heard them at higher revs

the knocking noise normally happens half the speed of a top end knock if that helps (bit hard to explain )

Little ends, are the gudgeon pins, where the small ends of the rods connect to the pistons.

depends how shagged the bearings are in them, but thats what normally sets them off, when ppl re-tension them they get noisy cos they cant handle the new tension, did you replace the belt?

run the engine up and put a screw driver on the tensioner (on the bit that DOESNT spin ) put ur ear on the end of it, see if the knocking is louder thru the screwdriver, if not try in afew other spots, ie cam cover, block to see if u can locate the area

Be careful with the screwdriver while it running!!!

You could just slacken the tensioner off and spin it, if its fucked you will soon know about it, a lot safer than prodding a screwdriver around the place while its running

Ahhhhhhhhhhh

Yes i had a guide drop, and at that point i did some experimenting and its virtually impossible to lose a valve if its not ATDC (gave it a go whilst seeing if i could shift the guide but the head ended up having to come off )

Well, first things first, get a nice stainless system, either a mongoose or a scorpion.

one of the best things you can ever buy for your RS
