Dave, you can't beat a Land Rover mate. Not silly money to buy an old one, easy to maintain. Bit 'basic' so say the least but they go on for ever.

Another good option Dave is the Vauxhall Frontera! Cheap as fook at the moment!

Dad has just picked up a 2.4 petrol one on a K Plate for £150! 3 Good tyres, 1 ok ish one, and the rest aint bad at all

Don't go near the 3.2 Isuzu's though, Jasesapphy off here text me earlier saying that he did 140 miles in it and it cost him £140! and thats without the track car on the back!

Steer clear of the cheaper jeeps dave, they like a drive shaft and a head gasket!

Ok, i'd go for the Jeep mate, has to be a 4.0 high output manual, although the autos are still good for a bit of fun when in 2wd. Nothing is really over-complicated either. it's all very basic when you look underneath.

Maverick, well, i hate them with a passion they're dead slow and not the best at towing, infact they really do struggle.

Land Rovers, for £1k your looking at a bit fo a dog tbh, old discovery's are best avoided tbh, they really do rust like no tomorrow and are just not worth it, it might have a V8 under the bonnet but still doesn't make up for the car's lame-ness.

Frontera, i like these alot, but the engines really aren't anything exciting and i'd be suprised if any of them could pull the skin off a custard, that said the 2.0 & 2.2 goes go alright but i suspect it'd really feel the strain if towing.

Avoid Troopers, they rust like no tomorrow just like land rovers.

Thought about a old hi-lux or even a land cruiser? theres a 4.2 1993 in my local paper for £3k which is cheap for one of them, i know it's waaay over budget but they're very capable machines, esp. when towing.

EDIT: that disco looks good for the moeny, if you do go looking give it thourgh going over, take a screw driver and whip up the boot floor carpet when on testdrive, this is where they go and not often detected until very bad as it's above the fuel tank so all the mucd and shit gets trapped in there, the supporting strips between the chassis that the boot floor is welded to also rusts way. inner sills, front floor pan, rear wheel arch inner chassis legs and bulkhead are all favorites

I just saw your budget mate, avoid any 4x4 for a £1k, it'll just wind up costing you good money after bad [especially Landys round that price].

Get a Xantia TD or something like that instead, that'll tow YUM no problem.

Plus, you can take up smoking a pipe and they're cool.

My dad had the Nissan version of the Maverick for a while, it was the 2 door 2.7td short wheel base, van style one, was a really good tool and towed really well, it used to do 90mph with a car and trailer on the back .

He also had a Cherokee 4.0 petrol, used to do fooook all MPG when towing and was a bit of a pig because it kept kicking down all the time with a load on, oh and the bits for a jeep are mega bucks.

We had a old red maverick as a tow car at my work and it was seriously lame, it was towing a big trailer with a ford galaxy on the back plus three blokes inside and it really struggled, although i suppose it did have some load on the back easy 2ton i suppose with the trailer aswell?

we've got a few shoguns at work for tow cars and they cope quite well.

if you think that's bad, i had a range rover that cost £4000 in the first 50 miles, and cost me nearly my life
