turbo
How to diag a faulty turbo?
1.how do you check the play in a turbo? wiggle the shaft up n down? or push it back n forth?
2.if the shaft had gone? will there just be play or will it cause the turbo to smoke?
3.if the turbo is leaking on the exhaust side of the unit, will the play in the shaft cause this?
4. what side of the turbo will be faultly if there is excessive oil in the charge pipes?

There is only one way to tell and that is to take it part and know what you're looking at.. however :
In & Out Play means: definately fucked
No in & out play means: still probably fucked! rebuild!
anything more than about 10-20 thou side to side is fucked

1. both. Endflaot should be negligable, upto around 0.5mm up and down is acceptable.
2. There will be play, and if it is worn enough, then it won't seal and smoke.
3. The oil seal has gone. Could also be worn shaft yes.
4. The compressor side. But, it's unlikely. This oil is usually there due to the breather and/or a rich mixture.
