Default car wont idle

car randomly developed a fault in which the car wont idle and stalls at junctions

anyone know any likely causes

If you have a dumpvalve try removing it for starters. It could well be airleak related

check that the oil dip stick is fully in. they sometimes pop out and will give you those symptons. it does sound like an air leak somewhere.

Hi check the dip stick as above, also check the fueling.

i recently replaced the sump is there anything down there that could cause this

Yes. The gasket needs to be air tight, as the breather system connects to the metering head, and again u will have an air leak.

had the same problem with my uk spec xr3i (mk4?)
used a can of carb cleaner into the throttle body , cleaned the air idling valve with same - problem solved!

Air leak, check all of above with addition to the hose from inlet - servo, usually leaks at the servo end, spray spray WD on the intake side of things to see if the revs rise and this will give an indication and atleast eliminate that side of things

my mate had the same probem, and it kept blowing his sump gasket.

yep u guesed. engine fucked!

there was nothing wrong with the sump gasket i replaced it because the sump was a little rusty, where is the air idle valve located

MY s1 STATED DOING THIS 3 WEEKS BACK...

turned out to be the fuel pump........drove fine but as he car warmed the fuel pressure dropped causing my to stall at every stop.
when started the revs would idle for 30 secs then die

if it is due to the sump gasket , try using the one piece from a later r3i
(does the erst's have this)
use a thin smear of hi temp silcone - seals much better

mine done the same but sorted the problem. the bleed valve pipe was not connected one end.

check all pipe for air leaks would be a good start
