after seeing a Rad in the Rear of a car its got me thinking
As most know you've all seen Performance ford Mag, its been done to a Mk2 escort, the WRC Escos on this months cover and probably many more in Norway, How much work do you all reckon it'll be to move the Rad into the back of an S2?

i was thinking about to cut the boot floor out where the spare wheels sits, weld another plate over so its flat but with a hole the sixe of the Rad, with a duct under the car directing air through it, but then it needs to exit? was thinking then to cut holes where the number plate is for an exit route??

i want to do it as far as i know its never been done to an S2, correct me if im wrong please to on that, would like it to show it off and also for the fact that it will reduce temps alot i should imagine
if you need to move your rad then you seriously need to question why. Either the rad or cooling system isnt performing up to scratch or there is a flaw in your setup, i.e with obstruction from the intercooler, or there is a gap between the intercooler and rad, causing a bad air pocket.

when i had my grs completley covering my rad one of my kenlowes decided to pack up and the fucking about i had to do to replace it was bollocks really plus i was never 100% happy/trusting/believing that this was the best way to go with an S2 bearing in mind the rad was sooo close to the turbo

of course it would but it seems a bit pointless, loads of other options to cool improve water temps.
Better Rad
Ducting to rad
Better air flow to rad
Heat wraping of exhaust downpipe.
Better water\anti freeze mix.

nowt wrong with the rad i got off you mate was there? lol
even though i never did have any problems for some reasons it was always lurking in the back of my mind to keep one eye perm on the temp gauge and start panicking when traffic was looming up like i said even though i never had a problem??

Yes m8, put the rad in the back, doesn't look like anyone knows of it being done before which is always a good thing.
Just think about it too, you could sling the McD's in the back and your bigmac would never go cold again.

No idea exactly how its done, but dont look like anyone does whos posted so far, lol
Heres one with the bootlid converted to a scoop, looks ace

was told before that theres no effective cooling (apart from from fans) until at full race speed with a setup like this, which could be a problem if its true, no idea IF its true tho...
But a setup like this finaly gives cossies and rsts the chance to have a decent thickness intercooler as the ones they run at mo are patheticly thin

exactly what i was thinking mate too but after reading the report in pf mag the ones about don't seem bad for the skinnyness of them do they?

Martin m8, if you're trying to persuade him not to do it, you'll have to be more forceful than that! You should have seen us trying to convince him that his pink neons looked cack.
He wouldn't listen

Why on earth would you want to put the rad in the boot on a S2?
The reason it's been done in that car in PF is because it's a WRC car, and removing any object from potential damage/clearing space from the front of the car is a priority.
Would be the most pointless gimmicky waste of time..............

send me a decent pic of your car mate and I'll use my "SUPER ADVANCED" Photoshop skills to create the car of your dreams. patrick.oc@btinternet.com

IMO the reason for it is to give room for a decent sized (thickness) intercooler...

WRC cars DONT have the rads in the boots do they?

The rad in the boot works extremely well with the Norwegian cars so there is no reason why it wouldn't here too.
Remember the main reason is because they run large intercoolers and simply don't have room to run a rad there too, so they have to relocate them, although in most cases the water temps are better than in the conventional position and so are the ACT's!
All the cars with this I have seen have a cut out underneath the boot floor that scoops air into the rad, but bare in mind, as with this months cover car on his first mock up of the rad box, the air pressure can get extremely high if your not careful, so think about the air out, just as much as getting the air in!
Good luck though!

Won't the extra water capacity created by the piping to the rear radiator setup help with keeping water temp down too?
But on the flipside I'd imagine you'd need to uprate the water pump considerably to get it to flow around the car properly?
Cheers,
Andy

Just lookin through a few pics of the quattro s1 and they also had there rad in the boot...

got a picture of what i think is the pipes for the rad too and theres no size to them really ... there pretty small
they used the big air intakes on both rear quarter panels to let the air in ...not sayin you should take a grinder to your car though

couldnt you pipe it up like a camper van and have the radiator in the car?
perhaps just to the side of you? keep you warm in the colder months!! that would be really good that!!
not sure how it would fair on MOT tests etc if you cut the boot floor out?
but maybe it falls by the rule... if aint there they cant test it!! pmsl
