I thought the XR4X4 was a 2.9l V6 but a mate has just bought a 2l one on ebay.

What engine will this be? any details on spec?

think its just a 2.o litre pinto twin cam. around 125 bhp. you can get a turbo technics conversion for the 2.0l but quite rare. hes better off having a look on the xr forums board as there is a chap on there whop has a 2 litre turbo

The 2.0 litre is a DOHC engine
There isnt many about as they were a bit underpowered for the 4x4.
I used to have a J plate one and it was good as gold all the years I had it, always started even when stood around for ages.

introduced around90/91 as a replacement for the gas guzzling 2.9. they had the 2.0l i4 dohc (8 valve) 120/125 bhp ish with a 0-60 of around 10 seconds, also badged as 4x4 ghia in the sapphire and estate...... they handle better imo than the 2.9 due to a better weight distribution and compare not so bad apart from accelleration and top speed.
as long as you sort out the fan switch and heater matrix it's a fine engine to run about in
but when they overheat, they melt, literaly
but because the front end is much less wieght than the V6 cars, they handle better round the twisties as standard
and if you break it, the gearbox and running gear also fit the cossie

fan switches are notoriously crap and because they are set to operate at such a high temprature
you can replace them with either a mondeo diesel or a sierra deisel version,, both of which cut in a little lower
the one to look out for is the red one, but the green one is definitly fro the sierra 1.8 TD

the tell tale signs of an expiring head gasket is a gurgling orm the heater matrix. this can also mean that the pipes ar the wrong way round on the water pump though, so don't be too alarmed

they wern't around for long, 90 - 92 only with the dohc engine
they did a dohc XR4i as well on an H plate, but it was nothing without the V6 and stuck in a 5 door shell

yup, the red one is best
at around the 100k mark you need to think about changing the timing chain but other than that, they are virtualy maintenance free
but if they cook themselves you are looking at a new head at the very least
if the chains snap, you are looking at a replacement engine as they tend to screw no1 main too
but its only when you don't get any oil pressure after putting the head back together again that you notice

i have had xr4x4's with dohc motor and the v6 type aswell, prefered the
dohc as you could smoke around cheeperwith them,i always found them
lively, and better handling, however they can bite you on the arse and throw their hand in,heads crack on them...
also had a 2.0 xr41 and that was
