I haven't used the Newman cam but it is supposed to be very good. I run the Kent CVH 35 in my S2 and like it so much I'm getting a second for my Fiesta

I don't rate Pipers 285T2 cam at all except as a door stop

I was looking at what cam to put in a few weeks/months ago. Most of the posts/topics that ask the same question often end up at 50/50 with the Piper and Kent, there's also a few posts on the Newman.

In the end I've stuck with the standard cam as theres almost no problems mentioned with them (or did I blank them out)

As Oranoco said piper's are just wrong the one i had lasted 7months before it gave up, use a Kent cvh35 now and well happy

Might give a Newmans a try next time as ppl seem to rate them on here

I'm gonna be upgrading my head and cam in few weeks time and i'm still trying to decide which one to go for ie Kent or Piper?

But I've seen a few posts about Piper cams not having a very long life!

Surley they should last longer than a few months even in a hard used engine!

CVH 35 is a cracking cam - IF it lasts.

I had one that did 20 odd k and it was still mint - and i mean mint - Karl checked it over for me. And i went and binned it

Mike had one that last a week - and had NO lobes left - again

If you have decent springs NOT double you should have no prooblems with the Kent Camshaft.

My engine had that very same cam, seemed to drive well for a standard engine, could easily hit the rev limiter in 5th and munched up an SL500 cab, its bitten the dust now though

Don;t know much about cams as they go - but love the way the car feels and sounds running this one. Pushed a BMW M3 out of the way this year at the Nurburgring
Love it so much, i asked Karl to have me another cut like it when it finally wears out, but i think his stage 1 ones are quite similar

I'm currently running a CVH36 but that will be under revision in a few months. So far it's spot on after 9k miles.

Am i right in saying thats the Ahmed Bayjoo Type R version or whatever? Don't hear of many people running above a CVH 35, bet it throws you back when the boosts hits

Fook knows what it is exactly! It pulls strong from 4k upwards and doesn't start to drop off. Even on the standard turbo.

If your lifters are worn and tapping its cos the cams wanked. You can't change one without the other on a CVH

does driving the car with a wanked cam have any knock on effects on the rest of the car?

dont want to keep doing miles in it if im doing damage

it does take a while to start sounding smooth, sometimes sounds like it needs a bit of a rev even after its been running for 10 mins and is nice and warm

what cam u recommend then?
How much is a cam by the way!?

Doesn't necessarily cause damage, the cars slowly losr performance though because of the wear, fitting a new cam usually sees a small power gain.

Bear in mind though the cam wearing is creating swarf, more so when it taps.

If it only taps when cold and then goes quiet thats just the lifters not pumping up properly when the oil is cold/thick. Oil may be too thick (lots of people put thicker oil in to disguise the sound of a worn cam), oil may be dirty, oil ways may be blocked.

Engine flsuh is good although ive never used it on a car with a turbo........always been a bit sceptical.

just had a new oil change, 5w 50 oil (made the dreaded mistake of the 10w/15w40 already sounded like a diesel)

whats swarf?

as long as im not doing damage i dont mind

exhaust sounds like its cracked on my downpipe tho so that mite be what i need sorted first

Fuck turbos are high maintenance sometimes!

Swarf......fine metal filings, basically all the material that is slowly wearing off the cam and lifters. When the lifters start tapping from wear (all the time) the wear rate is higher as its a downward spiral from that point, usually because the hardened layer on the cam is no-more.
