Yo,
I got the car setup at Jamsport on Sat, all was mint!
Tonight the car comes on boost on the bypass and makes a scraping noise, I back off and then the engine is rattling, there is smoke....lots of oil I think?
Cant really see much as it is dark but the bleed valve that was fitted....was not on any more
any idea what could have happened? Pissed off is an understatement
ps. Not blaming anybody for this....

Sounds like the bleed valve wasn't clamped in securely enough, and has blown off.
So........basically, your turbo will keep boosting and boosting and boosting until the weakest part of it lets go. Sounds like the bearings have shat it and the compressor and turbine has been fouling the casings.
My mates R5 GTT did this, he hadn't long had the car and it had a BRAND NEW (not recon) standard turbo from Renault, few thousand miles if that, pipe popped off the actuator and the shaft sheered clean in half
Bit of bad luck there but it could of been worse....?

Ok, Rich has just been round!
He thinks a piston has gone also and maybe the turbo....Where do I stand with this?
I have no clue about engines so I took it to Jamsport...You think they will help me out?
I have just spent 200 on a setup to get a blown up engine

Well you need to do a compression test first and get a definate answer whats wrong.
If its a piston then thats not easily fixed short of a re-build
I duno you could ring jamsport but i dont think they will really do a lot? Did you turn the boost up past the level they recommended when it was set up?
I expect they will say if the bleed valve has blown off then its not covered by any guarantee u may have had on the work?

I didnt touch a thing...I dont really know much (as you can tell) so I dont like to mess once a pro has set it up...
I am just gutted...spent 6 months sorting all the problems out on it and now look...back to where I was before I started

ok ive just got back home
from what i can see the bleed valve pipe has come off the turbo side
and the turbo has ran max boost bascially pressurissing the sump id say as there is oil everywhere
the bleed valve pipe is fuel line and is not clamped on at the actuator, turbo and bleed valve itself
its the pipe is also a very sloppy fit id say that goes onto the turbo and actuator, it needs to be clamped
we started the engine up and i had to hold it on revs to get it going, and it is missing and running lumpy, take teh oil cap off and it will tickover
whcih is opposite of what it should do? also a load of smoke coming out of the hole of the oil cap bascially breathing very very heavily
ill do a compression check tomorrow when poom gets back from work to see whats down,
ubut id say it fried a piston somewhere along the way
turbo side ill take a look when i take a boost pipe off
but the car still doesnt smoke on tickover or revs
but not good to hear about this as the car has only just come back on the road

The compression test will tell all but if its breathing heavy doesnt sound good?
You may have a fault on your breather system though if it runs with the cap off and is breating heavy.
Piston gone usually means smoke from the exhaust, so it might not be too bad

It was running 172BHP, 191lb torque with 15psi when it was setup on Saturday!
It came on boost and I heard a dodgy noise so backed off....then heard the tap tap tapping and crawled home at about 10mph for about 4 miles!

Tapping doesn't sound good.
xr4x4rs: you say none of the hoses from the compressor housing to the actuator were fastened on? And was fuel line? And apparently this was fitted by Jamsport?

Well.......fuel pipe aint the best stuff, but fastened on should have done the job. Its the lack of fasteners im a bit shocked at.
I'd give him a call personally, from what ive heard Jamie is supposed to be very good? See what he has to say and if hes willing to help out at all?

jamie is very good and so are the rest of jamsport
i recommended them to him as i do with other people i meet
jamie has worked on my old cossy and rs turbos and never had a problem
but i was surprised at no clips aswell

just whip the head off its an hour or so job....as we all know...
i would be suprised if its done a piston unless it was pinkin like a fooker but then surely you would hear this?
my first s2 did this almost exactly the same and it turned out to be the turbo shagged and the head gasket fooked proper!! the tapping was water in the oil making the lifters tap like hell,
good luck mate!

if its overboosted ..then there is a very good chance of it cracking the land on the pistons where the rings fit...
all depends on the spec of the turbo dont suppose you saw what boost it was hitting when it made the noise????
