Default Is it possible to fit a ST170 gearbox in an XR2??

Has anyone actually tried to do this? I have had the adea for a while now and a box has come up for a few hundred pound and really fancy giving it a go, but haven't a clue if its possible or not!

Anythings possible with money

TBH i dont know if it would fit, also theres the cable shifting mech you need to think about and the ST170 uses a hyrolic (sp) clutch does a std CVH clutch fit in with a ST170 box.

Why would you want to spend the money on attempting to fit an St170 box into an xr2?

Also note they involve parts that the cost far exceeds the value of the car they going in.

Its a 6 speed box, with 2 mainshafts inside it and very close ratios for 3rd, 4th and 5th gears for better mid range acceleration without hurting 6th gear cruise rpm. Perfect for any NA engine

still would be worried about the gear shift mech, box size in engine bay and then what clutch.

Or the possibility of a different gearbox for the xr2 he's already got, which is what he asked about in the first place

If this is a post on what you should spend Ł400 on stu [rather than what you asked originally] I would suggest a storm trooper outfit but with leather chaps style bottom half.

You'd look good in that.

With a pipe.

And maybe a monacle.

Dont the correct ratios depend on the power delivery/rpm of the engine?

Surely any na gearbox wont be perfect for any other n/a engine??

I know my car has an identical gbox but different ratios to a puma altho theres barely 20lbft of torque between them......

Paddy, don't be so flippant!

This is a discussion board FFS.

Otherwise this post would have had one reply with the words "Yes if you have enough money", and then should have been deleted.

Not so much of a problem as most NA deliver the power roughly the same, unless you have a heavily modified NA.

The problem would be if you used that gearbox on a turbo car, as turbos tend to like to work against longer ratios to make the boost.

I'm gonna change the box on the xr anyway for one with a lsd and maybe shorter ratios anyway (especially if I do keep the car N/A)

just thought 400 for a six speed shifter was pretty cheap and as I intend to put a zetec in the car anyway, might be something worth considering.

Wouldnt you want longer gears for a turbo engine on track?

How does the ST170 box compare to the MT75/MTX75 (never can remember which is the RWD box ) dimensionally as that may be the single deciding factor.

To be honest Stu that Ł400 would put you a long way towards a Bernie box that would just bolt in hassle free

well, if I go turbo then I'll stick to a stage 2 bernie box.

N/A then the ST one would be perfect for it.

Steve its the MTX75 thats the 4x4 one. (I remember the x for xfer or 4x4)

I don't think the st box is a MT75 box thou....

I know it's not but if they are similar size wise then you will be buggered as the MT75 requires a lot of metal hacking to get in a Mk3 and the Mk2 bay is smaller.

i looked into a bit and its a fair amount of work, either fabricating mounts to the car or making the box bolt to a cradle. i ruled it out as too much hassle.

stu, youre a bit wrong there.

MT75 = the sierra one
MTX75 = the FWD jobby.

the X has nothing to do with 2wd/4wd/fwd

ps i think it would be a great idea to slap the st170 box in if you had an unlimited budget, but since we all live in the real world, i'd say stick to an old ERST gearbox with LSD. it'll do the job you want, and have a nice slipper (which you probably wont need TBH)

ps whats the plans for the XR2?

The cars in the garage atm, but I'm getting some spec'ed gaz coilover, lightweight alloys and slicks, big brakes and will be dropping in that 2.0 I have in the garage. Now either going to get an area-6 turbo conversation on it or drop it in n/a on some bike throttle bodies, thats the basics anyway.

as long as you don't go over any bumps too fast as those boot boards arent the most sturdy

just admit it the 6 speed is for the gimmick factor cos you want 6 gears!!

i'd go for series 1 gearbox I think in an xr2 to give it some acceleration.

Stu - all i would say is that if 250 is your goal, then go for it!
IMO, you'd be MUCH better off going to 200, with it being lovley and reliable, and spending more money on brakes, suspension etc.....
I've still got a lot of xr2 bits and bobs up the garage that will aloow me to make a very fun xr2 when the funds allow..... and it won't need to be silly bhp either as i've got all of the important bits to make it handle well!

Stu why not just ask me? yes it will fit, the box is actually physically smaller than a standard XR2 box, you can if you are using a zetec engine use the cradle, no need to fabricate anything, it's just thats what I wanted to do...

Hydraulic clutch? no problem really is it? Either use a Mk4 fiesta/ Puma system or get a hydraulic pedal box from someone like Rallly design.

Cable shift? why is that a problem? Hmmm really hard threading a cable under the car or thru a hole in the bulkhead.

I dont bite mate, and unlike some of your so called mates.. I dont take the piss either
