Default Sunroof - Anyone ever removed one permently?

I've got a fair bit of rust on my sunroof, it could be repaired but I'm worried about the roof warping. So I got thinking there must be some escorts out the with no sunroofs at all, so how about replace the roof skin?

Anyone heard of it before?

or would it be easier to just try and replace it?

where is the rust? on the actual roof or on the sunroof runners?

if its the sunroof runners etc, just replace them.

you can replace the roof skin but its a big job and probably not worth doing as its very hard to blend it back in, and disguise the fact that its been changed., and if its not done properly it will write the car off.

expensive too

Good point last thing I wanna do is right off the car when it's not even moving lol

There are a couple of patches on the roof about the size of a 10p piece of bubbling rust and when you open the sunroof, on the drivers side bit there is some more serious rust. It could be easily fixed but it's fixing it in such a way that it won't come back. I'm gonna start a new thread in the restoration section soon so I'll get some pics up of all the work I've gotta do.

If you do get it all fixed up I'd suggest spraying a gallon of Waxoil inside the roof cavity and that should hold the rust at bay.Regards Micky

I have never spoken to a bodyshop about mine, but looking at it logically, I can't see any way. I would LOVE to see before and after pics of a roof repair.

I would certainly change mine for a non-sunroof roof, but have 2 main concerns.

1. Cost.
2. Authenticity, people would always know that something had happened due to the lack of sunroof!!

That was one of my main concerns. I'm off down the garage now to get some pics of the damage. I'm gonna start a new restoration thread but I'll post a link in here so you can see some pics.

the rust will come back no matter how much waxoil you put on it.

replacing the roof isnt that much of a big job. we do them in my work in a few hours and were an insurance approved bodyshop

go onto www.turbosport.co.uk and look in the resto threads section, tons and tons of peeps replace there roofs on the mk1 and mk2 escys simply becuase they have sunroofs in and they dont want one. Lots of people do it at home, really aint that hard to be honest if youve dont welding jobs like new sills or wings before
One of my mates had it done to his and it cost about £200 notes. No difference in work envolved betwwen them and an RST

I think youre contradicting yourself mate.If someone cuts out all the rust, welds in new metal and then fills the cavity with Waxoil, why should the rust reappear????Whats different to doing this compared to fitting a new roof skin????Except the bigger cost and hard work of course, but what else?????Regards Micky

i am meaning that as in if you just get the rust sanded out and painted. it will come back.
