Default Prombelms with a smoky FRST

Hello all

I need help!! When i hit boost its fine but when i am coming off boost a LOT of blue smoke comes out of the exhaust! Does anybody know what this can be?

I have changed the turbo and its not that.....i have also checked the valve stem seals and its not them either. The breather system is fine...

.....oh yeah and the temp sender unit has snapped off in the head any ideas how i can get this out!

Any help on this would be a great help if not i might just go and crash it in the nearest wall!!!!!!!!

The joys of RS ownership

Craig

When you changed the turbo was it with a brand new or recon or second hand as it sounds turbo oil seal related to me. Could be piston rings . Speak to your local friendly tuner and see what they say

I was thinking piston rings. Going to do a compression test on it tomorrow. I am going to buy a new head anyway getting a stage 2. Will put some new piston rings on it then.

FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Thanks for the help

rsmcelroy Need's to tell you the odd breather system that the owner before him had rigged up it go's to the sump but the breather system when running well is very good on the rs turbo's there no need from any nutty professor crap

I would start by refitting the stock stuff. To be honest I've had issues when fitting an aftermarket breather with the revs staying sky high. So has my brothers until he made a restrictor up to go in the vacume pipe

J7AOC you are obsessed with my breather system!! I know it needs changing and it will be done when i put the new head on it.

I am hoping byt fitting the new head it will sort my problems out. How do these compression figures sound?

1st = 135
2nd= 150
3rd= 135
4th= 140

Does these sound about right or is something wrong?

I changed my turbo 3 times, i never thought it could be the bottom end fooked cos i had had it rebuilt 6 months earlier, but Matt took it all apart and yes it was fooooked so if everything else seems ok, im guessing it will be that!

dont say about bottom ends, i fitted a new set of big ends just to get me over christams, when i fiered it up sounded fine but turbo was suddenly smoking like fook, rebuilt it and it still dont it (white oily smoke, 100% turbo) so car never seen road since as im rebuilding it now

they all seem to be around 10 bar there and should be between 12 and 14 bar so yes the compression is down fella

Thanks for that pollocks. Does this mean that i need to change the piston rings to get compression up? or will compression improve with the new head

Cheers

compression could be down due to the valves on the head but ive been reading up and if there is a variation of 1 bar between any two cylinders is a indication of a fault.... so new head my be a good idear but may be in same situation!! anyway get the new head fitted and if it still happening time for a bottom end rebuild, just hope that the cylinders are not scratched... other wise you will need a rebore with bigger pistions!!!

well personally i'd just go and whip the head off its an easy job with the right tools bout an hour going steady away at it like then once you have the head off have a look and see what the condition off the bores are like andgo from there fella

how do you check stem seals???

it could be valve guides, when the engine comes off boost & runs on vacum it may be sucking oil down the guides

you dont, if ya gunna go to the trouble of checking them, you may as well stick a new set in for the sake of a tenner

Can you cjheck the condition of the pistons from just lookig at the top of them? i.e. is there any 'give away' signs that i should look for?

Looks like i might have to do a bottom end rebuild (mrs will LOVE that!!) if i do that surely i might as well go Zetec?

check the pistons for what? unless its hit a valve the pistons wont show shit, what ya looking for is the rigde at the top of the bore, if its real bad the bores are very worn, or if you turn the engine over by hand look at the bore faces, any score etc then it needs a rebore.

i would check and change the cheapest stuff first,, but if your gunna do a bottom end rebuilt its gunna cost, you say might as well go zetec, thats up to you but if your think zvh they have there own problems to over come, skimming pistons, mod this, mod that etc i would stick with cvh unless you want to go the whole hog.

i priced up a 2.0l turbo lump to my FRST cvh, bear in mind i was doing it not a garage, and for the rebuild cost there wasnt much difference between the full zetec to the cvh, zetc worked out about Ł150 more give or take but then i had to allow for a live map tune, and there not cheap so bear that in mind, at least if you rebuild the cvh bottom end, and its done properly thats all you got to lay out for, and evey thing will fit back and theres no fucking about. modding engine mounts etc.

but the choice is yours, but cost wise for rebuilding cvh bottom end is gunna be (what ive paid just for my bottom end) Ł600-Ł650 thats everything, regrind, shell, pistons, rebor, gaskets, crank seals etc but on mainland where you are it shouls be a little cheaper, compaierd to the isle of wight

Cheers for that jayrs

did you keep with standard pistons in yours? for that figure of Ł600 - Ł650 is that for a standard bottom end?

When looking at the pistons there is a 'lip' on all 4 pistons where it looks like it has been rubbing on something. I guess that this is not normal!

yeah standard bottom end mate but thats with mahle 0.5mm oversize pistons, so in that price i got

crank regrind
new big end shells
new mains shells
thrust bits for center of crank (forgot the fuckign name)
rebored block
brand bew mahle 0.5mm over size pistons
gasket's
sump gasket
both crank seals, oil cooler seal

i got loads more bits as im rebuilding the whole enigne, so on top of that price Ł600-Ł650, theres Ł250 worth of brand new kent cam, head gasket, head bolts oil, oil filter loads of bits mate check out my rebuild thread in my sig mate (it needs updating a tad though)

So the biggest outlay is the pistons then? when buying new pistons do i need to buy new piston rings or does it come complete as a kit?

The only thing that i prob will not be able to do is the regrind?

Your car seems to be coming along. Whats with the smily face RS Turbo badge

the bagde was a good idea at the time, and that was a long time ago but its different so thats whay it was done, but i got a standard sticker to go back on

the pistons come with rings and pins mate, cost me Ł290 with postage, but some engine builders will do all the work for a set price, like ofr me over here, its Ł20 a hold plus vat for rebore, but i know a place on mainland that does it for Ł60 maybe plus vat i didnt ask, but a regrind over here is Ł160 then the shells on top so i got my dads cousin to get it done near him, Ł167 inc vat for regrind and all shells so bit of money saved there, but the rebore at that place was same price as here so didnt bother sending the block over to him.

i got a new water pump to go on too, it was only Ł20 so its worth doing, nothing wrong with my oil pump so thats going back on

Ł290 inc postage! where did you get them from? i have been looking and they are Ł450!!

i will call around and ask for a few quotes on getting a rebore tomorrow. What sort of things do i need to ask?

I am hoping it does not need this but i think it might do!

na dont hate ya mate, good on ya, guess you knew the guy or got some for of deal? which ever way Ł200 well, Ł350 with pistons for a rebuild is good. for a old orion

just messing

problem with place over here, is because its the only one they can charge what they like, hence the slowness in doing my engine, waiting for family to come over, now im waiting for someone to pick up my crank its a nightmare.
still im not gunna put block in for re-bore till cranks back.

It was actually my Sisters Fiance that got it done for me, hes from Birmingham and everything seems cheaper up there, parts are ALWAYS cheeper. He said he could get it done, took it away, came back (admittedly a good 4/5 weeks) and said 200 sheets, which was very pleasantly surprising

And jayRS just to set you straight, the engine came OUT of the Old Orion, re-built, and into the cabby
