I wouldn't get an R6 to start fella - get something so you get used to riding on the road. I've done both - all you need to worry about in motorcross is not falling off most of the time - on the road you have to learn not to get killed. My best mates rugby colleague is in hospital right now after being side swiped by a car that fucked off. Broken hip, collarbone, hand and neck injuries...........different ballgame being on the road.

PROPER bit of kit
r1 it is then lol but if you think about it ithe r6 is still only a 600 0 to 60 is most prob about 6 secs and what about 180 mph as long as you dont drive like an idiot (hard to do). i think it would be a good bike to learn on tbh i just need the experiance on the road as i have the skill on the bike.
lol more like 3.5-4secs 0-60 i reckon and not even close to 180. maybe 160 max.
i'd have to disagree about getting a 125 first. pointless IMO. if you wanna get a slower first bike at least get a proper sized bike like you learn on, maybe a kwak er5 or whatever they use now? no point having a wee bike and especially if you already ride moto X!
remember you turn the throttle and if you have a bit of sense you could start on any bike.

just been reading up on the r6 it has a redline of 17500 127 bhp so yup it probally does o to 60 in close to 4 secs fukin hell so its not a little 600 its a monster. its the bike of my choice i have always liked them but may get a 2003 or 4 model
Isnt the R6 quicker off the line than the 1 due to it being lighter etc? I was under the impression the 1 was the better beginners bike. Sounds silly I know.
YZ250 would beat an r6 to 60 if you could get the traction
Used to have an 04 yz myself. amazing bike.

first of all im sure its been proved since that the new R6 will rev nowhere near 17500. IIRC it was maybe 16k tops but not sure.
secondly for 3grand you'll get nowhere near an 03/04 model

Dont scare me, bought my mate's gsxr 600 srad last summer as he bought a gsxr k1 750, fell in love with it, it's beautiful, just need my licence now, been up the road on it a couple of times and he take's it for a blast every now and then, just saving to do my direct access. As my mate said he thinks a 600 is ideal if you want to go down the sportsbike route, if you want to tour, you dont start on a sportsbike, anyway what do i know, i aint even got a licence yet.

The R1 is NOT a beginners bike - even less than the R6 !!!

R6 is a perfect first bike. Big enough to not get bored within 3 months but not so big as it will highside you out of a roundabout.
GSXR, R6, ZX6R, CBR600F/RR all great bikes.
Not much in them at all tbh, just pick the one you prefer the look off......lol

If someone is thinking about an R6 they will not be satisfied with a kid's 125.
Speaking as the ex sales manager of a motorcycle showroom there is NO problem with a new rider jumping on a 600 sports bike as a first bike provided they have an ounce of intelligence
If you are a moron they you'll kill yourself on whatever you buy.
Darwin's theory of natural selection at it's finest imo
No matter what size bike you buy, it's only as fast as you allow it to be

A bloke at work who has been riding for years refused point blank to come and have a look at an r6 with me, his reason "you will be dead in a month son"
Now to be fair if i jumped on it and pottered about then no problem but which young lad buys a bike to just potter about on NOBODY, he knew this and said to stick with me original plan and i ended up with me 600 bandit.
In all honesty its a far better bike than an r6 for a first bike, i beat me mate of the mark on his r6 cause mine is heavier and wont flick you off the back at any opertunity. O and now i have the 14 tooth front cog i can stay with him till 130. Mine does an indicated 142 which for any learner is more than enough.
And another point he cant keep with me on the twisties cause he simply cant ride the thing so whats the point apart from the "Ye i'm johnny big bollox me i have an R6" poser factor
That said i will be getting a gsxr 600 or possibly a z1000 at the end of the summer

The R1, R6 comment was solely based on what people who've been riding bikes for a long time said to me. They reckoned the R6 was more aggresive than the R1 up until 100 or something.
No offence but personally I think 600 bandits are shite
Asthmatic, wheezy motors, budget suspension, no ground clearance.
The 1200 bandits only redeeming feature is it's ability to wheelie all day long
If you can beat an R6 off the lights I would question the R6 riders bike control
Hurry up and get a GSXR600 and you'll see just what I mean

I bought it cause i like the LOOK of bandits, with it being my 1st bike i have nothing to compare it to, and there quiet big which is what i need being 6 6"
I wouldnt go as far as saying its a shite bike, and you just proved my point if a 600 bandit can keep with an r6 of the lights i would question the riders bike control. Fact is he has had quiet a few near misses and i aint had 1 and still manage to be quicker than him.
Its not the bike thats quick its the rider FACT put my mate Marko on an 600 bandit and put me on an r1 and he would leave me for dead why cause inexperienced riders CANT ride powerfull bikes.
Its not the speed that kills its the cornering, i mean to get a sports bike round bends you need to get it cranked over and the fact is that new riders are scared to get it right over, which leads to them either riding slower round bends or running wide into on coming traffic or a bush

Im interested in learning to ride a bike also. I dont want something too fast but fast enough for a bit of fun, i wouldnt trust myself in a big bike. What in everyones opinion is the best bike all round for a first bike, ie looks, driveability, speed, ease of learning etc?
You mentioned speed so I assume you're looking for a sports bike?
As I've said above, any modern Jap 600 will do. You can't buy a bad one really.
GSXR600, R6, CBR600RR and the new ZX6RR are pretty full on and aggressive.
The older ZX6R and the CBR600F are pretty good all rounders but still bloody fast
Go sit on a few and see which you like the feel/look off

IM looking at doing my bike license in the summer, and want to get a gsxr600 surley if you realise that the throttle isn't an off -on switch, and that you can use it progressivly it would be ok???
IMO this can be argued all day long. Its pros and cons. And the end of the day you can kill yourself just as easily on a 125, 600 bandit etc as you can on a r6 or any other 600 bike. Ive just bought my first sports bike and first bike in 11 years, im undergoing my Direct access and cant wait to get on that bike....BUT, I KNOW ME.... im the only person that knows me, and i know that im sensible enough to take it easy and ride caerfully until i know im ok to start enjoying it how it should be, but still riding sensible...Question is:
Are you sensible enough? Dont kid yourself. Be honest and if you think your not and would jump on it and wind the throttle right back every time then seriously think about not getting one, or if possible have it restricted for a few months.....
just my opinion

A modicum of common sense is all that's needed

I've Ridden alsorts from ducati 996, sp honda, gsxr 750 (old type 91plate ) and 2001 R1 yam, Last bike 1200 bandit, street fighted well underated bike IMO, plenty of mid range punch but without fairing a lot of buffeting @ 125plus, i've outpaste zx600's on a roads, the R1 was like a pussycat compared to the reputation, but my mate said from 2000 onwards yamaha had made changes to the R1 to tame it, so early models must be where the rep came from, ducati more like a track bike, out of these bike the old gsxr was a animal had a few highsides on it power like a light
switch on or off . learnt to ride approx 11 years old, for someone going
onto a r6 it's down to common sence in the use of the throttle respect it
until you gain experience with the power and brakes especially in the wet
my brothers mate has just took a direct access course and bought a r6,
my first thoughts as a first bike was like most of us are saying its to quick.
but he's still about & now bragging he's had 150 plus out of it??
Dave R.
The only thing I will say about the early R6's is that they run a strange profile front tyre. So they aren't meant to be the most fun in terms of feel from the front end.
Maybe not the ideal 1st bike over something a little more planted like a Ninja, GSXR6 or CBR

hi ya mate
my first proper bike is my 748 ducati, i was told by my mates to buy exactly what you want from the start, as youll only end up riding down the road and seeing what you wanted and thinking, shit wish i had bought one of those,
thats why i bought mine, always wanted one, best looking bike ,imo,
just go and get it, if you find it to much to handle then sell it, at least youll have tried it and got it out your system

these days you have to worry about the other people on the road and not yourself and have to be exteamly vigilant the most experianced riders will tell you this also.
and i still belive the r6 is the bike for me.

When I had mine, I rode it next to a mate on his roadbike at 30 and was amazed at how slow 30 was on the yz. Actually worried me quite a bit because I used to ride between riding spots with no helmet on etc alot faster than that...
