If you do that you will only be able to get away with tiny speakers, if you replace the grille's you can go up a size, tight fit mind.

want to do it with as least chopping neccesary, also so they are hidden.

are the fronts, 4's or 5 1/4's?

and the rear shelf??

is depth an issue with the doors, so they dont hit the window glass etc

I think they're about 11mm, they'll fit ok re. the door frame I think, with larger speakers, without original grille they can fit but have to be positioned just so.

I have 5 1/4's in my doors, I only had to trim the plastic lugs that hold the grille on the door card and drill a couple of holes in the door for the speaker screws.
Window clearance is tight, but the speakers have a pretty hefty magnet, others may not be soo deep.

I made some mdf rings for the front, covered them in black acoustic cloth, then screwed through the original door holes to the mdf, then fitted the panel. Then I fixed some pioneer ts1799s to the rings. When I remove them no extra holes will be left

Have just finished doing this exact mod to my 4be. If you use some Corsa 1993 onwards spacer rings, you can fit 5 1/4 inch speakers behind the front door cards without even having to touch the grilles on the card itself.

In the rear, if you carefully remove the grill, you can unscrew the original speakers and fit 5 1/4 inch speakers in the rear as well. You cannot go too proud though or the original tweeter will cause problems upon refitting. You will also have to fabricate a mounting system for the parcel shelf speakers as the originals were held on with bolts through the middle.

Hope this helps.
