Default Anybody with experience of E30 BMW's especially M3

This is not a for sale post

The cossie will be going later this year to help fund a new house . The plan is then to get a cheaper dedicated track car, plus I'm starting to get the project bug again. Once we've moved I fancy getting hold of an E30 M3, stripping it, caging it etc etc

Would appreciate any info and cool pics for paintjobs

Oh and before people suggest it, I'm having a word with Sean this afternoon

I reckon you'd be so bored, so fast.....

I know they are great cars, and I've been in Seans and it's awesome.... BUT they're kind of slow........

Surely for a project, you're better off with something more... exciting?

I also appreciate that because of the size of ya, you're not gonna be looking at a Caterham!

much better off with an E36 M3... cost very little now. Get the simpler and far cheaper non EVO model. The 5 speed box is stronger as well. You get ALOT more power than the E30 and you can get alot of weight out of them as well as the interior as bodyparts are VERY heavy as standard. I thought about doing this ages ago... then EVO magazine stole my idea the gits

Early scooobs make great trackcars as well in my opinion. Stripped and boned with over 300bhp

basically... Forget the pony old E30... toooo slow and only really trade on past reputation now in my opinion. They will teach you alot about driving though.

I agree with everything above, nice cars, drive well, fucking slow though really, no doubt due to the weight.

Porkie, its amazing IMHO how many people write scoobs off as not serious track cars because of the number of chavs that now own them, in reality they ARE very capable cars.

I was worried people might say they're slow. I looked up the weight and they're actually 1275kg. My Escort came in a 1350kg! and with only 200bhp or 250bhp with mental engine they're never going to be earth shattering in a straight line. And I recall someone mentioning that an engine transplant can screw up their balance. However, they would be a 1/3 of the price of the cossie and I think they are so cool when painted up in the old touring car colours.

Anyone know what parts are like; availability and price.

The other option is an E36 as they are similar'ish money and 300odd brake. Anyone know the weight?

For old skool cool the E30 wins, on every sensible decision based on cost against performance, i would go for an E36 M3, probably the 3.0 as the 3.2 has a habbit of expensive vanos failures.

More than capable! they are stunning! a punchy and well modded 300bhp classic Scoob is a right little weapon. Good fun as well as you can really throw em into corners. Get as much weight out of them as possible and they fly. They can carry serious speed through corners and obviously have great traction.

Evo 2 or 3 would also be well worth a look...

whatever it is though. Just BONE the fooker. Fibreglass everything, and a simple cage for saftey.

The only problem with the scoob as a trackday car is that a mildly modded one with an exhaust is going to be tripping noise meters all over the place! With Bedford getting more strict, that's got to be a consideration.

E36 is a great car though - can have some drifting fun with it, and they're cheap (non-EVO). Plus, if you ding a wing, it's nothing too much to worry about. Pluuuus, that chassis

With the E30, the whole LHD, scared of crashing it thing would worry me.....

Evo's seem to have a fantastic reputation that they are the all conquering king, and the scooby is just some tacky chav car, but everything ive seen an experienced shows very little difference at all between the two marques when looking at the early ones.

Rich, good point but I think they do non chav ones though Alex flowers one was fine as Bedford wasn't it?

Renton and Sean bought 2 cars from auction, one was a 3k ish evo, one a 3k ish Scoob. I would have bought the Scoob myself.

Driving them though Seans Evo did feel the much much better car to be honest. And I think they are a bit stronger mechanically. BUT the Early Evos just look wank in my opinion....

Both very very very good value though but both need suspension and brake upgrades before going near a track really

330mm 4 pots, some decent springs, decent tyres, BONED interior, decent exhausts, filters, oil cooler and a bit more boost and both would be a HELL of a lot of fun and last all day long I reckon

Same with the E36 M3

E30 M3 was about the same speed as an ST150 fiesta on the 5th gear test track. It was a good standard example

Make of that what you will

Have to look at it from Paul's point of view though..... Going from a good handling, pretty quick Escort Cossie, you're going to want something that nadles first and foremost.

As you said before Lee, look what EVO did with that M3GT - that would be such a fast car!

As you said before Lee, look what EVO did with that M3GT - that would be such a fast car!
I saw that Rich, with the suspension and brakes it was lapping pretty good times round bedford and didn't do too badly at the ring It was pretty boggo engine wise as well.

Exactly! Which equals muchos reliability, instant power delivery and excelltn driveability.

Was a really nice project -proper suspension, and brakes, decent set of MOs and tyres, cage, exhaust and filter.

Then just spend the rest of the time having fun! I reckon round Bedford it'd be so much faster than your Escort........

If I had the extra cash, then it's one road I'd consider.......

E30 m3s are graet cars. They handle beautifully and are actually quite light once you have stripped the leather interiors and air etc out of them. 1000 kg is not a problem.

The S14 engine is a gem for an NA engine. The heads flow very well.

200 bhp in na form wasn'nt enough for us so we turbo charged one!

We were invited along to a recent Performance BMW thrash at brunters, where it posted joint fastest 0-60 of the day and went onto do 154mph with a badly slipping clutch. Would have pulled 160 if the nearly new clutch didn't give up the ghost.

One last thing we found out at brunters is that they have a pretty strong shell!

See pictures bellow... 80-100mph + 2.5 barrell rolls =

Funny, thats what the chap who was driving at the time said on the way up there!

I think his exact quote was "You would have to be a twat to crash at brunters"

We ain't ever gonna let him forget that statement!!

In fairness there was an old raised concrete base for something with that they had covered with soil to make a small mound. The car hit that whilst sliding sidways and....

yeah yeah I know.

It wasn't actually the straight it was the right hand corner furthest right as you stand looking up the back straight.

PMSL...

this has improved my day

and in combination with....
E30 M3 was about the same speed as an ST150 fiesta on the 5th gear test track

i'd hazard a guess that the M3 was a whoooole load nicer to drive round than the Fiesta..
