They are cut straight as opposed to angled, so when engaged, the forces work 90deg from the shafts against each other - there is no forces in the direction of the shafts. No axial forces...no thrust forces - I'm no engineer but I think those are the correct terms.

you really need to try a straight cut box first mate..

they are FAR too loud for the road and dont like shifting at anything aprt from full throttle..

would be a nightmare onthe road IMO

maybe got mixed up

thought the reason normal gear box's were helically(sic) cut was to ease engagement?

I cant hear any passengers speaking (and visa versa) unless we have the intercom or practice headsets on.

Even shouting at times it is just totally impossible to hear what they are screaming at / for, and the passenger is what.... about 20 inches away ?

Yes they are loud

Main two reasons for straight cut gears:

1) Less side loadings, which means they can take higher loads without punching the shaft out the of the case etc (pulsars do that a lot on helicals for example)

2) MUCH cheaper to produce, especially in small numbers, so when you are racing and want loads of different ratios, you wouldnt be able to tool up for helicals even if you wanted to.

I only ever use straight cut cogs when helicals wont handle the power if its a roadcar.

So from what I see a straight cut gearbox would stop an animal like me from trashing it everyday when I slam between the gears on the redline!

Doubt it will save the 4th clutch in 2 years .......

Thats with 155bhp, fuck knows how I intend to keep a cossie clutch intact for more than 5 minutes if I convert my car to cossie power!

You normally break the synchros doing that not the gears, so SC wouldnt make any difference unless its a bog dox or something too.

Hey!!

I've not had any serious crashes in the last 2 years!!

Driving off the side of a mountain does not count as there was no damage!!

All the forward gears are in constant mesh - they do not slide into each other to engage gears. Its the syncro hubs that lock the various gears to the shaft to produce drive.

Don't think I could cope with a straight cut box if it sounded like that

Most rally cars run straight cut dog engagement gears, also most productions cars have a straight cut reverse. So you can imagine what it would be like if you had to drive about with that whine all day.

You can also get helical dog engagement gears, so you can slam the gears in like a rally driver, but still have the low noise of an everyday box.

There's also a company in Japan that developed a gear shifter that you just push forewards or backwards to change up or down.

That sounds very similar to mine The whine sometimes actually hurts your ears

Its solidly mounted to the car everywhere with not a single rubber bush in sight, the noise transmits all too easily.
