im okay if i have a helper to hold the wires together, but if not how for example would you solder to wires that are in mid air?

one hand for soldering iron, other to hold one wire? that leaves the solder in my mouth and delicately holding one wire against the other trying to keep them together!

was trying to join 2 thick wires in the motor today and they were so thick it took a lot of heat + pressure to heat them enough to melt the solder....

so i tried coiling them together but then in mid air i couldnt get enough pressure to heat them up - use a pair of pliers and it takes the heat away from the iron etc

pretty crap post but just wondered the correct way of doing it really!
can you buy a clamp or something that holds them in place or do i just need a second pair of hands

 

You can but little men things with 2 crock clips for hands and a magnifying glass ect to hold wires together, but to do it properly, ideally you want both wires very hot, and just melt the solder on top!


But you can cheat but melting a huge blob of solder onto the iron tip, and dropping it onto the wires

how thick are we talking with these wires?????

believe it or not i actually do know a bit about soldering!

 

i "tin" both ends of the wire then joining them together is a doddle!

 

Good point, tinning is also a good way

i did tin them, problem was though as they were in mid air they both try to go different ways - i find holding them both in the right place is fine, but then the soldering iron is on the floor! so you hold one wire, and the other moves away

think its just the thick ones i was struggling with because they require so long to melt the solder again!!

all depends on how thick the wire is

if its fairly thick and you can just about twist them together slightly i dont use a soldering iron as you will bet there forever

i use a little gas burner that my dad uses for hes cooking lol

very handy bit of kit and can be used for all sorts not just soldering lol

 

bloody hell guys,, your soldering not welding the cables

 

connect it to the mains and rest some solder on top, switch on and pray! it will either be a really solid join or something bad will happen

i used to do LOTS of soldering in my old job, i always used to twist the strands, then twist the two wires round each other and heat both wires up with the soldering iron, when its hot enough apply the solder and soaks both wires.

 

get something like this soldering aid



even has a magnifying glass incase your eyes are shite

 

awwww u guys arent reading what the guy has to say, he tried twisiting them, it didn't work.

that soldering aid looks a bit technical - cheers for all the ideas though, think it was just too thick a bit of wire to be doing in the air !
