Driving the cos on country lane, changed from 4th to 3rd only doing about 50mph. The car made this terrible clunking rattling noise like something had fell off!!!

first thoughts were the gearbox or the diff. when the clutch is raised while the car is in neutral the rattling starts again and the car wants to stall, its as if the clutch is trying to engage. The AA geezer said it wasnt a drive shaft it was something internal instead. i hope it isnt the box. the car will still engage all of the gears which makes me think it isnt the box.

not really no!!!! the engine revs like normal but there is this annoying rattling when you lift the clutch, either in or out of gear. im really stumped.

 

Sounds like my car did when i broke the input shaft each time i did it.... Sounds like a new box is needed...

 

but the good news is ill give ya 10 quid for ya input shaft as i need it as a clutch alignment tool

It makes the ralling noise in gear clutch up? Does the car move?
Does it make the noise out of gear clutch up?
Does it make the noise in gear clutch held down? And the same out of gear?

car tries to move but doesnt want to. ye the car makes the noise out of gear and clutch up. it makes no noise in gear when the clutch is up or down!! it only makes a noise when the clutch is raised to the top, either in gear or not.

 

The last bit of that post is contradictory, but I think I know what you mean... Box out either way, could be clutch but more than likely as suggested above....

 

just sell me your input shaft !!!!!!!!

happened to me doing 30mph just changed from 2nd to 3rd and bang

ended up 3rd gear and input shaft mate

full recon on the box im afraid

 

Id agree with this,same thing happened when i was out on a test drive before i bought my Escort lol

Not a nice noise,it had stripped 3rd gear

 

Happened to mine.... sounded like a bucket full of nuts and bolts.

 

get a new t5 m8

spadge its a 4x4 on std box running 400+ (Karls 400+ D )

just got off the phone to him, stripped 3rd gear apparently

took clutch and diff as well

Mine's done the same Martin. Changed into third, came on boost, bye-bye teeth on third gear. Mine still drives, just, and I hope it will get me to SCC next week
