Default Home Gas Usage Question

Ever since moving into a smaller flat for some strange reason my bills for my gas supply have doubled - I've now got one for £240 for the period December - February!!!

All I've got that uses gas in my place is a cooker, central heating for 2 radiators & a water heater for hot water for the taps. Heating goes on from 5am-9am, then 5pm to 11pm daily.

I've phoned British Gas to make a complaint etc - they've told me to take a meter reading every day for 7 days which I have done & have got to phone them tomorrow!!! They've said that it could be a faulty meter.

I've compared my bill with one from my old place (5 radiators, bigger place etc). Over 3 months in my old place I'd used 93 units - in my new place which is tiny in comparison I used 925 units - in the past week I've used 49 units!!!!

If the meter is suspected to be faulty then they'll take it away & test it - if it is knackered then there'll be no charge & i'll get 2 years worth of bills recalculated & money refunded but otherwise it will cost me £80 if it isnt incorrect!!!

So my question basically to anyone who knows is.....what else could it be - and what should my gas usage be for my setup???

Youve got almost an identical problem as I discovered yesterday! Scottish power want to charge me £537 for 29-12-05 to 01-03-06. Told me todo the meter reading thing too. My annual bill for 2005 was only £210

I havent been at the property much since decemeber and the central heating is off.

That's way toooo much.
My last bill = 100 units
Total estimated charges for WHOLE of this coming year by Npower is £225.
That's for a modern 2 bed semi house. Hot water set for 24hrs, heating set to minimum 15 degrees 24hr, plus 21 degree 2hrs in morning and 7hrs in evening.

Sounds like they are reading the meter for the whole block of flats.

How many flats are there?
Are the meters remote from the flat, i.e Are they all side by side?
Or is the meter within your locked property?

Turn your gas off at your meter for a day and see if any neighbours get a visit from a heating engineer to fix their heating!!

Turn off everything in your flat and go and watch the meter to see if it is moving, try this in the evening when everyone else may be in the other flats.
