get a file, file 2 flat sides onto it opposite each other, then use a spanner to remove it. or....get an easy out kit(screw extractor kit0 you drill into the bolt, then put an easy out in (its a cone shape with a reverse thread) then turn it anti clock wise whilst tapping the end of the easy out with a hammer to keep it seated et voila, bolt is removed

Then, after that, a Chisel. Try Chiselling it round. Hard to explain that one though.

Seriously, it will work. Use a narrow bolster chisel on the flange of the nut and tap it round.

use a stillson wrench! they grip tight on round items (ie steering arms etc), a sump plug wont be a problem.

Hammer a slightly smaller socket on. Probably an imperial and then as you try and undo it tap the bolt with a hammer. It breaks the seal. Mechanic showed me that trick on my motocross bike when i fucked my sumpbolt. He got it undone in a few minutes

Best thing with sump bolts or any bolt thats too tight and feels like its gonna round off is to tighten it slightly first. This breaks the seal as well

But I was thinking more along the lines of a bolster chisel that he most probably already has, compared to an easy-out kit that he almost certainly doesn't.

so many ways

ive taken so many rounded bolts off and i must say that all the above ways work.
dont knock the chisel idea, coz if he aint got a welder or the easy outs then its a way that will get him out of trouble quickly and its free.

if u can get a slightly smaller socket on then best to use a t bar and tap it while u try to turn it. this will help keep the socket on the nut and also help break the seal.

Thought I had better make the point after all the suggestions about getting it out, do you have a replacement ready? Dont want to get it out and then realise you need to drive the car to get a new one

Which type of socket are you using?

Bi-hexagonal

or Hexagonal

Use the Hexagonal one they dont slip as easily.

Another thing i have done in the past is grind a slot across the middle of the head and then used a flat metal bar in it like a lever. Came out piece of piss.

Monkey wrench first, if that doesnt work, hammer nad blunt chisel will almost certainly do it.

Get a BIT of heat on it too, will come out easier if its warm (but obviously dont blow torch it till the oil in the sump burns, lol)

but seriously, if you can get a smaller socket on the end, make sure it's only got 6 sides to it (as someone posted the pictuers of up top), put a fairly long extension on the end of it (to make sure you are keeping the socket properly onto the nut) and then get a big long bar (so you can apply even pressure without struggling and possibly slipping off the end if the nut decides to give up the ghost)

the other option, if you want to try it, is to use an impact drive to knock it off

you can get all sorts of tools to undo rounded nuts but they don't tend to work as well as they do on the telly

if you can find a stud extractor that might be worth trying too

one more thing
if you are worried about drilling through the bolt to get an easy out in there, don't worry, if you buy a new sump plug you can measure how deep you can get away with drilling before you go into the sump itself (not that you'd want to be doing that and getting swarf into the sump now do you, then you WOULD have to change the sump just to be on the safe side)

and one final thought, try using an impact socket on the nut as they have thicker sidewalls and have less chance of cracking

ginge, if its them draper 3 taper bit sockets, than its all well and good like, but the c*nts dont work unless you place it vertically on the stud.

as in i paid £20 for one to remove the seat bolt that the head sheared off, from under the car.

place shiney new stud remover under the car, and it does fuck all as theis thing called gravity pulls the taper bits away from the fookin stud

ended up drilling the fukka out
