Normally. If the car has a closed breather system then yeah, it should die as you are introducing a massive air leak into the engine.

Neither does mine, but I have an open breather system. Chances are your mate has a blocked breather pipe or something like that, worst case is it is knackered.

every one ive had or worked on has either died or ran really rough as a rule i walk away from 1s that dont and they've still got original breather system

mine used to die if you took the cap of till the engine went bang. (due to well over 30psi of boost)
now ive rebuilt the engine it runs fine if you take off the cap. does this meen i've got somthing wrong somewhere?

it's still running the standard breather system.

got to take the head off to sort out a leaky core plug thing so i'll check it all out when i do that.
i'm just happy it runs. i didn't know a thing about building engines till i built this one.

i cant have done to bad. its been running ok for about 5 years now.
till it started pissing water out the side of the head that is.

If the cars has a standard breather system, the filter may be clogged if it doesn't die when you lift the cap.

They're only about £6 or £7 last time I bought one. Don't bother trying to open up the existing one and clean it out...more hassle than it's worth. Replace it, nice cheap and easy

Everyone does realise its better to set the car up to run with the breather cap off don't they??

I.E. run a open breather system rather than a closed one

Also serviceable items anyway which a lot of people don't realise, 40,000miles i believe, they start to break down over time and don't actually do the job theyre meant to.
