Default Why do people fit Diesel Gearbox's to RST's?

As above really, thinking of looking a Series 1 with a Mk6 1.8 diesel gearbox and paddle clutch, not happy with it at all but will it make THAT much of a difference?

Are they actually any stronger, or should I get the Series 1 'box to go with it?

They fit them for a couple of reasons;

The first main reason is that people believe they are stronger, which is bollocks in the mk3- mk4 gearbox, however the mk6 gearbox case is likely to be an IB5 casing, these are stronger as the bearings are bigger. If it is just a standard diesel box you won't have an LSD either

The other reason is of course ratios, diesel gearing is higher than an RST, especially in the S1 which had even lower gearing.

Can't think of anything else at the moment, I mean, have you seen the time, man? I'm still a bit hungover

Dan

All RST gearboxes have LSD's mate, what people do it take it out and bung it in their Fiesta boxes. As Tony says, the ONLY real advantage is a taller 5th gear.

Think i'll get the bloke to include the Series 1 box in the sale then!

Whats an average price for a Series 1 gearbox? and will the Paddle Clutch fit the Series 1 box?

Decent box has got to be £250......depends what size the paddle is. You can run either a 200mm clutch which is standard S1 size or 220mm which is S2. As long as you've got the corresponding size flywheel you can use either but 220mm would be better.

Diesel boxes would be good on german motorways... you could drive 260 km/h or a little bit more. But they're not much fun if you're not on motorways...

Could fit a better gearbox all together than a 20 year old box of nails

MTX75 has the BEST gear ratios for all of the engines i have seen like CVH Zetec etc.. Even a YB FWD

+ How much is a decent MTX75 gearbox? Ask your local breakers or search Ebay... i have seen them from £30 upwards. A std box will take 330bhp no probs..

Anyways enough said...

There's simply no BEST gearbox for a car/engine. Depends on what the driver wants. I like a short one like S1 ERST but when I drive on motorways I'd prefer a longer one like S2 ERST. And with a 330 bhp engine MTX also would be too short for me And the few hp more a MTX can take it isn't worth changing it As far as it can be fitted

There is no way an MTX75 will be too short for you

Its THE only box that can supply a genuine 60+mph in 2nd gear.. Dont belive me, go and try with your own box

An MTX75 will take you accross the 1/4mile line in third gear at 100mph+

Go figure

Will do mate, I know of one that's got a pretty good spec on it and has been cared for somewhat, but also got a couple of Series 2's to look at with decent specs
