They fit them for a couple of reasons;
The first main reason is that people believe they are stronger, which is bollocks in the mk3- mk4 gearbox, however the mk6 gearbox case is likely to be an IB5 casing, these are stronger as the bearings are bigger. If it is just a standard diesel box you won't have an LSD either
The other reason is of course ratios, diesel gearing is higher than an RST, especially in the S1 which had even lower gearing.
