Why didn't he just turn the key off?
Sounds a little suspect to me.

OK, so the article does say about his fear of disabling the Power steering. However, if you were heading for a roundabout in an accelerating car, surely you would turn the key off? At least it might stand a chance of scrubbing some of the speed off.
I would have thought that in the length of time that he claims it was uncontrollable, he would have had an opportunity to do something. Especially with the Police on the line to help him!!

However I think this is just like that lorry driver from a few years back. He had Munchhousens (sp?) desease. I would guess this blokes the same.

'police cars couldnt keep up'
135 mph? sound like pretty shite police cars lol
so, hes just crashed at 130 odd mph into a roundabout
Rolled it and gone skidding down the road to an eventual stop
and he's said 'dont cut my car up to get me out'
i think that its fukked anyway mate

There was a movie made about this before, based on a real life incident that happened in America. What happened there was the car jammed wide open and nothing else would work, electric's and brakes etc, so she had to just steer for miles avoiding anything in her way, Police had to block highways off, move all traffic and clear those toll booth things etc. Eventually she lost control and had a high speed crash.
Anyway, I don't know how a car's electronic's work, but on a motocross bike ( and most likely any other motocycle ) when the throttle is stuck wide open the kill switch does diddly squat because theres too much rev's for the switch to over - ride and cope with, the only way of getting the engine to stop is by turning the bike up side down!
My idea is maybe with the car running so fast that turning the ignition off wouldn't do anything, or is it totally different?

Since when has a 318 BMW been able to over power its brakes.
I mean if you pressed the brakes hard enough theres no way the engine with only 115bhp is going to over power them, it would just slow down and eventually stall the engine. Yeah they would get hot but it would stop.
I mean try it, floor your car in 5th gear and then stamp on the brakes while on full throttle, the car slows down and will stall the engine .... well it did on my on a ST170 with ALOT more power than a 318

Go do 130 then keep your right foot planted and try and slow the car using your left foot on the brakes. Might get some retardation, but heat issues will stop the brake working, well before you've got anywhere below 70 IMO. Having said that I dont think he had any real problem with the car. As I said above its a classic example of Attention seeking mental illness.
In fairness...
I believe him... i rekon he could have used his napper a bit more in order to slow/stop the car, but even if he was speeding and tried a fly one to get off with it, i dont think he would have the guts to go through with a 100mph crash?
He'd poof it and "somehow" slow down before he had to crash in my opinion?
So i rekon there was summit up, and he just didnt think properly about how to stop the motor.

ignition off with keys in and slowly apply the handbrake.
He sounds as though he kept quite calm seeing as this went on for 60 miles so should of been calm enough to think of this, even so he reckons he had the AA on the phone advising him WTF
surely they should know what to do, keeping going and crashing it at those speeds is the last option in my book

maybe it wouldn't go into neutral you ever tried pulling your car out of gear whilst on full throttle ?
but 1 turn of the key would have slowed the car down to a complete stop why would he be bothered about the power steering the a1 a straight road apart from that roundabout he hit lol!
should take his lisence off him i reckon he's a nutcase!

I was travelling back North up the A1 when this had just happened, no way did he hit the roundabout at anything near 100mph, or even 70mph, he only made quarter the way around the roundabout, (would it even have made it this far...) hit a HGV and rolled onto its side demolishing the Chevron. Work it out, if he WAS doing 100mph + he would have made it under the truck and prob into the service station!!!!
Should have seen the torrent of Police T5's Range Rover, Mercedes Police cars trekking down the motorway for the next mile or so, and the Police Choppa was out.

he mustve been booting his car abit for the accelator to be jammed to the floor wouldnt it? with it being an auto he might have just put it down to get past some lorries
who knows?!?

IMO anyone with a driving licence must be able to know what to do in such an instance he is without doubt very stupid or did it on purpose, he only had to turn the ignition off on click to kill the engine that is something that in my opinion every driver must /does know.
the steering would have been heavy but it wasn't as if he had to do any u turns was it!! just move left a bit to the hard shoulder.
I lorry did this a few years ago and at the end he chucked it into some barriers to stop it, he pleaded guilty in court to I forget the offence but it was basicly being a twat!!!!!!
If it is proved he was being a prat then he should have a long long road ban IMO.
