Default whats this??? ecu question

i have a L1 ecu ( i think) and i opened it up to find this,
its a collins board,
what is it? is it just a replacement board needed to run a different chip?
or something else?

and the chip had the sticker sating 403s, 3bar and comp. but no number,
what comp housing would ytou normally run with greys and a 3bar? .63?

i would ring collins but they are shut and im inpatient. lol

It's Collins' copy of a Pectel protection board, basically. It doesn't necessarily mean it's running a Collins' chip though...best bet IS to ring them.

Unless I'm mistaken, the label is on the 'wrong' chip.

The Pectel (or similar) board was primarily introduced to protect a tuners work, by decrypting the software on the chip at run time - this was in an attempt to stop copying of chips..... they can also add useful features (depending on the board) such as anti-lag (for P8 EsCos ECU's) water injection etc.

Pectel is a company that made a mapping system for the Webber MArelli ECU's that our beloved Cossies use. The software creates an encrypted chip, the board decrypts it.

Stu did the 'perfect' description on a thread somewhere, which describes the ins and outs, but in a nutshell, what I've put above.

Not all tuners use them, some just use regular chips, and I think Stu @ MSD has his own protection system.

As SPadge said - on the left hand side (as per pic above) there should be a screw - the colour of this usually helps in identifying the ecu level.

There's L1 (3dr and RS500), L6 (2wd Sapph'), L8 (regular non cat' - early 4x4 Sapph' & cat with lambda - late 4x4 Sapph') and P8 (Large turbo EsCos)

the screw is white plastic,
theres a sticker on the lid of the ecu that says,
WD48.08/L3H.93
does this mean anything?

and what about the comp? would you say a .63 housing?

Thats a late manufactured Level 8 fitted with a Collins PE encryption board. Sticker on teh chip, is totally uselsss and meaningless to anyone. Best buy another chip to suit your spec is my advice.

and at the same time. lol

i guess l8 is good, y is the chip no good?
the engine came with a 3 bar and greys. and i have a T3/4 with a .63 comp housing.

this will only be a stop gap until i change the ecu for something else.

will i be able to fit a std chip to this to run std turbo, injectors and map sensor?

Stu's saying that chips of an unknown source/spec (stickers aren't always reliable or informative enough) are best left alone to avoid damage to engine etc.

And basically, the later the level of ECU, the better.

To go back to a std chip, you'd need the std chip and std Ford daughter board (looks similar to the Collins board) The std Ford chip won't run in an encryption board.

L8 is teh best YB Ecu in my opinion. So thats good.

Chip is mapped for:

Injectors: 403s
Map sensor: 3bar
Fuel Pressure: ?
Compression Ratio: ?
Engine capacity: ?
Turbocharger: ?
Head ports: ?
Cams fitted: ?
Midrange spike: ?
Boost held: ?
Fuel Octane: ?

I wont go on....

For a 400bhp ish engine? Very little in it to be honest, and in many cases L8 is better. Just get it mapped live, ideally with closed loop fuel control, and your away, 400+bhp and 30+mpg with total dependability and reliability.

Remember, even if you buy DTA or similar, you still have to pay someone to map it. You would likely be financially better off keeping your L8.

mmmm
defo something to think about
but i might want to run other bits in the future,
such as
nitrous, WI, launch control, full throttle gear change, anti-lag, boost control, possibly 8 injectors, coil packs...

all that sort of stuff, can the L8 handle this?
