well it just goes on and on.......
bought a supposedly 52k fsh,4x4 cossie from someone i thought i could trust-so i didnt check it over properly
well it had a noise that i couldnt at first find where it was coming from.
stu suggested that it could be cam bearing,so upon checking the belt tension(as it had apparently just had a new one)i found the belt to be sooooo tight,so i slackened it a bit.noise not as bad.
then it decided to run like shit-which turned out to be a multiplug fault(thanks again stu).got that sorted out yesterday and it ran like a dream.got in it this morning to drop the little one off at nursery and in traffic at about 2mph,it just stopped,as if the cam belt had snapped
upon inspection the belt was still on so tried it a couple of times but nothing.
just got it back and found the timing looked a tooth out,so slackened off the belt to adjust it and found this on the exhaust cam.......

as i was hardly moving,im hoping it hasnt done the valves.has anyone else on here had a cam snap like that?would it take the valves?
im now presuming this is the result of the overtightened cam belt which has killed the bearing
so much for buying a supposedly low mileage 4x4 to use as a runabout
never had this much trouble with some of the shitter 2wd ones ive sold for £2500!!!
i feel a bit better now...

Common, although its normally at the other end. Wounder.
Depends when it snapped, your on a gamble now, were teh valves open, or were they closed...? Let us know.

im just praying now that i can fit a cam and it will be ok-hunt is on for a cam now.
ive had god knows how many cossies and in theory this is the newest/lowest mileage one ive ever had,and had nothing but trouble.which was why i decided to keep it as my daily runner(pusher).one things for sure it will be ok in the end
good job ive got my rs500 to keep me sane-when i can find time to finish it,due to this other one
when i met my mrs i had a shitter of a g reg 4x4 that i bought for £2000,which was always breaking down-3 yrs down the line i had restored her faith in them enough to warrant having my toy(rs500) and one for daily use,of course i was taking her to work, she was late-i get moaned at........back to reliable bmw's i think for runabout
anyone got a standard exhaust cam out there?

fookin pain in the ass,but we have to keep the faith
i just wish it was somebody else's car instead of mine-but ive had a good run of reliable ones so i suppose i can live with one bad egg, that needs some help from us fordheads.
i mean,i would only be finishing off my rs500,if i didnt have to keep messing with this.

If its snapped at that end I'd guess theres a very good chance of piston - valve contact

i agree in part, but i bought this car from someone who has had/got some very nice cars.he had had the cambelt done-but whoever did the job has clearly overtightened it.i hope he doesnt trust him to work on his other cars!
but the fact is they are old cars and things will let go on them,no matter how they are maintained/driven.its a known fact that they eat money-sometimes more than herion addicts!!!!!!
but we keep buying them......
anyway the numbers on the cam are;
between 3 and 4 cyl- YN0011 and LYD 2
anyone help?

with regards to valve damage-im thinking/hoping that as it was only ticking over, once the snap happened the cam has sprung back to how it is now, which looks like all valves may be closed or slightly open
its fingers crossed time

Had this happen many years ago on a 4x4, only driven about 250 miles after a Ford RS specialist had fitted a new cam belt. They eventually conceeded that overtightening had caused problem. Cost them a new engine as I had my foot down when it went.
Had a cam break on a BDA, shifted from 5th to 2nd a bit too soon... Tell-tail on Stack tacho only goes as far 11,000
Broke the cam into 5 bits and broke a web on the cam carrier.
The engine builders quote was "Do you feel lucky ?" ... I was... Got away with a new pair of cams and a cam carrier on top of the normal scheduled rebuild (new valves / springs etc).

prior to me buying my esc cos the cambelt snapped at tickover, 16 bent valves was the result!!
the owner had the head fully overhauled, Ford charged him £1500 just to remove and refit the cylinder head!!
the engine builder charged £1500 to fix the head
I have all the bills here, glad I wasn't paying them!
