hello all,/


i could do with every single bit of info that you all know on the RS1600i,....

mate of mine has seen one he wants, and although i know a limited amount, i knew you lot would know more.....

im talking, every stamp,...what it says, where, what interior, wheels, anything you can think of.....

also,....

price....average USED condition.....

by the way,..its a grey colour,...if that makes any difference??

heres a few basics, if u have never owned a mk3 escort dont buy one simple as that,

rot as per s1 usualy places

price wise anything under a grand is cheap now whatever condition.1500-2500 will get a nice one.2500+ and this should be mint not nice or good condition "mint"

batter tray is put in on the piss, not straight like a s1

twin coil ignition system not like a s1 ie distrubiter, imo devalued if its a dizzy conversion

check the chassis number carefully on vin and driver side floor pan

various opitions unlike s1 ie may not have a sunroof, or tinted windows,or opening rear quarters,or electric windows.

look for the spoiler protecters on the rear quarters

make sure dash lights work

car may idel errractic when first started ie hunting the sorts itself out and idels smooth

Fucking hell mate your asking a lot.......

What I would say is the following.

Dont buy it unless you're prepared to hang onto it as they dont sell on very easily due to them being a bit specialist and slow and having a cult following but not much more.

Dont buy one if you're not prepared to have EVERY single 16i boffin pick somet about the car that is UNORIGINAL or MISSING.


The car- std MK3 shell.
Has bespoke front chin spoiler and rear tailgate spoiler.
Bespoke interior. If ripped spares are rocking horse poo and the cloth to repair them properly is nigh on impossible to get.
Dashes the same.. rocking horse poo.

9 options- Electric aerial, metalic paint, rear seat belts, E/w, C/l, S/r, variable speed intermitant wash wipe, dash dimmer, Stereo upgrade.

Colours Diamond white, black, Caspian blue, Stratos silver, Sunburst red, graphite grey.

Should have FOG lights and SPOT lights.

Things to note
twin bar anti roll bar setup- check to make sure the adjustable brackets are not cracked or broken.

All the wheels should only have markings on 1 spoke other wise their S1 wheels - they LOOK the same

Front grill should have all slats open and is a different finis code- look for bodged ones with a dremmel.. another rocking horse poo bit.

Twin coils.. should be on the car really and work But look out for misfires, the whole management system is notourious for going pair shapped.

Bonnet stickers should come over the front edge about 6m

Battery tray should be angled in and is not the same as other mk3 escorts.

Y reg cars have twin bolt strut tops and A plate cars have single... I believe it makes the later cars easier to get replacement suspension for.



I cant think of much else at the moment.. if I do I'll add it...

also the wheels have writing only on one spoke unlike the s1 which has it on 3.

seats are not recaros but same sort of design.

4 spoke steering wheel.

different antiroll bar set up to s1 and standard mk3

theres also a exhaust hanger that comes off the shell just behind the engine , tony fuller told me about this only on rs1600i shells.

early cars have 3 bolt strut top late have 1

check the dipstick should be an 82 stamped one lime green not bright.

solid tappets

and they have worse brakes then a s1 so drive carefully, great cars to own and drive, wish i never sold the one i had however that was a nice looking car and the presnt owner went throught it rot wise and found a few nasties so be warned.

Yep agree with all that...
If it aint got coils it will devalue it to the purists but for reliability its better without em... imho engine wise its more or less an Xr3i if has a dizzy... but they came with solid lifters which will need adjusting but is unlikely to still have them due to age/engine rebuilds.

prices .
My opinion would be.
500-1000 for a car that has v.little tax and test but has most of the correct parts and is worth saving, they wont break for a lot of money so tread carefully.

1000-2000 You could be lucky and get somet very good OR not.

2000-2500 A good working car, which wouldn't look out of place at a show.. should have most original bits and be in good condition maybe slightly modified and had a restoration at some point.

2500 and the car should be excellent

3k and upwards and it should be as close to perfect as you can get without concourse but prob have a few more miles on em.

thing is,....he car isnt amazing condition,...its been used, and is a lil bit tatty,....interior is in good nick, but the usual rot probs are there,.....

doesnt apear to be anything missing, or un genuine,......
and is for sale for Ł1500,......absolutely no offers,......

but he s a mechanic, and is going to rebuild the engine, and have all painted nice etc, and send the shel to be restored, and painted etc,.....

Well....

Wings are available new from Ford still or if you hunt around you'll get a good copy set for no more than 30 quid.

Bumpers are harder to get but I know a man who can for 30 odd quid each.

Battery tray - std escort one can be modded with a little know how.

front panels may be still available- where 2 years ago.

Doors- forget new, hunt around for a good 2nd pair- Mk4 doors fit perfectly BUT door handles may be different design and the Mirrors definatly are.

Rear arch repair panels are available for about 10 quid a side and a floor is about 40-80 quid in 6 sections I think, 4 pans and 2 inner sills.

Scuttel panels are none exsistant but left and right hand repair panels are locateable.

Tailgate- DREAM ON they just dont exist, I think they were rotten from the factory.

For any of the above IMHO TRICKYDICKY is the man who can and in most cases will source these bits.

Also incidently I know someone who has a similar condition car in black for about the same money.. and I believe it "may" be available but no promises..

IF your mate takes the project on it is purely gonna be because he wants to do one.. it wont be worth any serious money in the long run and will be difficult to get rid of.

Inner wings rot where the bonnet hinges bolt...

Again repair panels can be purchased for not a lot of money but I wouldn't wanna try and fit one even if I could use my welder

Shell isnt quite standard mk3.

The battery tray is different.

Also they came in both revisions of the shell, the pre may 83 two bolt strut top shell with the funny camber and the post may 83 revision


Most cars I have seen/owned still had solid lifters and in standard trim or lightly modded they perform much better on the coils despite what has been said.

HPI it. I have looked at soooooo many over the last 12 months and i'd say on 70% HPI have revealed something the seller has been less inclined to
