performance is OK, nowt mind blowing

not too old so usual things to look for, service history etc, no real rust problems except round the base of the spoiler as its a water trap

Depending on your age for insurance, you may as well just get an Si.

The GTI is just an Si with 5 spoke wheels and side sills..... [tho many more Gti's have optional half leather]

Engines are 115 ish bhp?

Look out for rust, rust and more rust plus those engines suffer from potentiometer problems so make sure it idles ok from cold, when its warm and revs freely enough

all 95 onwards 1.8 zetec escorts have the exact same engine, get a 1.8 lx, much cheaper then add the stick on bits if you like that sort of thing or use the 2k you'll save making it go faster

All the gti's had half leather as standard didn't they?

Anyway, I had a 3 door one in black and loved it. As said, the performance isn't great but not too bad. Depends what car your upgrading from I suppose.

The only problem I had on it was the fuse box. Water must of been getting into it somehow and fried it. Cost about Ł240 from ford for a new one.

No leaky wind screen, if you look where your ford fitted alarm horn is ( just under the bonnet on the left hand side ) you will notice two holes, they sit DIRECTLY above the fuse box and water gets in thru there, common problem with the MK 5's but not so bad on the MK 6's

gti : wouldnt bother - i looked into it as well, as said the performance is like any other 1.8 zetec apart from 130 spec xr3i. The insurance is stupidly high, the same as an st24 and the st24 wouldnt even need to try to beat the gti!

As said get the si as it has the smae performance, 5 insurance groups lower, and add the half leather seats and sill extensions and you are there
