Default Friday Quiz for the 3DR/RS500 experts - ANSWERS POSTED!

Answers posted in BOLD:

Thanks for those who took part - YES thay were hard, some proper stinkers IMO:

1. True or False: In the UK less than 12 Sierra Cosworths 3DR's were purchased in 1985?
Only 10 cars were sold in the UK during 1985

2. In the UK, how many Sierra Cosworth 3DR's were purchased in 1987.....
a. 161
b. 761
c. 1,761

3. The 3DR Cossies were assembled at.........
a. Cologne
b. Genk
c. Saarlouis

4. Conversion of the original 3DR to RS500's were performed by..
a. Reliant
b. Karmann
c. Tickford

5. True of False: New RS500's were factory fitted with eight grey injectors
FALSE....8 yellows were fitted, four of them being dormant

6. What is the correct engine code for the RS500 engine.
a. YBB
b. YBD
c. YBJ

7. Most RS500's were produced in...........
a. Black..........392 produced
b. Moonstone.........only 52
c. White......only 52

8. Standard RS500 boost was factory set at.....
a. 0.6 BAR
b. 0.8 BAR
c. 1.2 BAR
Bearing in mind the above factory set boost figure, you can see the HUGE potential locked within those YB engines back then......Now days we think nothing of runing our T3's on 1.5 BAR held.......and our T4's on 2.2 BAR held!!!

And Matt, a T4 turbo on 0.8 BAR boost is plenty laggy enough without reducing it to 0.6........ Top effort from you BTW

Bearing in mind the above factory set boost figures, you can see the HUGE potential locked within these YB engines back then......Now days we think nothing of runing our T3's on 1.5 BAR held.......and our T4's on 2.2 BAR held!!!

Question 7 is wrong!!

There were 52 RS500's built in white PLUS 4 prototypes which makes 56 and gets the correct build numbers up to 500

doug,

you misted one point, your rs500 total only adds up to 496 built,

thats 4 short!

so 392 black

52 moonstone

56 white including the four proto types all still around

so in the end we have 500

heres one for you,

how long did it take for ford to sell the rs500 cars from launch in there show rooms,

A 2 WEEKS

B 4 WEEKS

C 12 WEEKS

answers on a post card please,

why did we have so many black ones, simple all dealers had to pre order cars and most ordered more black ones,

so blame the ford dealers for low numbers of white and moonstone ones,

OK Martin to clear up this point, this is the information I have:

The actual "production" run (in other words cars produced for selling on to customers through the dealership) was 392 in Black, 52 in Moonstone and 52 in White a total of 496 cars.

BUT before the Tickford production run FOUR protoypye RS500's were built to complete Ford engineering tests. At a cost of a little over £ 500,000 (half a milloin pounds!) Ford executed all durability testing and the manafacturing on these FOUR prototypes. The prototypes went through 100,000 miles of endurance testing that included 6,200 miles each at 140 MPH !!!!

I very much doubt that the 4 white prototypes were ever offered for sale.........Unless anyone can shed any light on this ?????????

also the 4 prototypes were also built by Tickford not Ford as is commonly believed, they were built at Austin Martin Tickford's Milton Keynes facility supervised by Ford, the main run of 496 cars was completed at Austin Martin Tickford's Bedworth facility.
