No Cat D means it is a total loss category D, i.e. the car will cost more to repair than it is worth in a nutshell (although there are other reasons)
It will only be Cat D if they write it off.

Depends really. If the car aint worth much they may well write it off. And pay out on it.
From memory Cat D can be repaired. Cat C can but its normally not worth it. But Cat B and A cannot be repaired.

Cat A - total loss, IE, fire no mechanical value - cannot go back on the road, declaired as fit for scrap only
Cat B - total loss, mechanical value in spares - vehicle cannot go back on the road, but can be broken for spares
Cat C - total loss, but repairable, allowed back on road subject to VIC check
Cat D - total loss, financially only, IE - a full respray after someone has damaged the paint work
