Default what do i do?

my PC showed me a message saying a had a corrupt file in system32. that stuff all concerns booting up doesnt it?

well my PC wouldnt start any more so tried a few methods then ended up fully formating it but still no luck!

so question is ... can i buy a new hard drive and put it in the old tower? or is system32 part of the motherboard and i'll need a whole new tower?

thanks in advance, really clueless about this side of IT!

You can buy a new hard-drive, and put it in the old tower and, once it's got Windows installed on it, you can put the old one back in and use it as an "extra" drive! Although I'd run a full error-check on it before putting anything "important" on it, just in case...

Out of interest, what error messages were you getting when you tried to boot up with the current hard-drive?

cant remember what it said exactly as its completely fooked now i trying to load my parents settings onto it. something about start up file in system32 folder is corrupt or missing. suppose i could have rescued it but wanted to upgrade soon anyway so tried the full format!

Should have, unless it's bad blocks on the start of the drive......Windows will tend to just install on the start-edge of the drive, hence if there's physical errors there, I'd say it'd cause that kind of erroring no matter how many times you format & reinstall?

Yeah, you'd need a proper Windows installation CD to install after a full format......unless shops have now started to give out "ghost" CDs that restore your system to factory-default with Windows and default programs installed. I've never ever bought a pre-built computer from a shop, so wouldn't know...

I have the unfortunate please of support on Branded PC support. The manufacturers put a 2 gig partition on the drive with the Pre-Build Image on it. Yeah great until the hard drive dies. Grrr.

Bring back the CD Ghost images.
