I was installing a new avg11 programme on my computer and it switched off by its self (its been doing it recently, but no issues) when I switched it back on it went to the desktop and every desktop item had disappeared and all that's on the desktop is a window with my documents and the bar across the bottom isn't there and I haven't got a clue what to do!

Its running Windows XP

Any help would be great!

When you power the computer on repetitively tap the F8 key and you will get a Windows XP startup menu, choose the option for safe mode, once in safe mode prey to god you can run a virus scan as I think that is what your problem is

Failing that try the repair guide which is a sticky in this room.

google the symptoms and likely youll find its a virus or malware, find hte removal instructions and do it all in safe mode.
Once you are back in windows run a thorough scan a couple of times and some anti spyware/malware tool.
