Connection issues
Help(please),
My pc doesn't always connect to the net, thought it was the shonky thomson router, but discovered if I do a restart, leaving router on it always work straight off 2nd start.
It's like it's not "catching" first time, done all the usual check settings, defrag, disc lean, history wipe etc, gets a lot faster after this, it's a very old pc of 2.6ghz(?) or whatever it is a AMD athlon if that helps, about 8-10 years old, do they wear at all ?, can't see it but don't know if they suffer issues with newer stuff like routers etc working in harmony.
I find it quick once it's connected, my bro has a "dual core", think that's like 2 chips ? so better but think that's fairly std these days, would there be a advantage in a upgrade ?
AS you see confused I am, any advice would be most welcome, thanks

To be honest mate that cpu is very old in years and performance, i had an athlon chip back in the day, upgraded all my pc internals probably 4 times since then.
The performance increase by upgrading would be like night and day, my cpu is a quad core i7 chip, it has hyper threading tecnology which lets each of the four cores of the cpu handle two tasks each which in effect is like having 8 cores, four physical and four virtual.
Theres even hex core cpus now ( 6 cores ) but you wouldnt need to go that far.
Dave.

Thanks for the info, it's still doing the job, actually surprisingly quick my mate says when going right.
I had a mate look at it today, it had a "sasser"(sp) attachment, I assume that is a bug of some sort, I use Norton 360, but he says this "sasser" was well hidden, and very old.
It's gone from a citroen 2cv to a 911 turbo performance wise since he's touched it, so somethings a huge amount better.
I've looked on google for sasser bug but can't find any info.
He's a compy tech for the usaf, having to deal with this stuff all day every day, so assume he's come across it before, took about 1 hour, after 10 minutes said "ah I see" so knew what it was problem wise, did say it was very unusual and had been dormant for years and years, and was "bloody good" as bugs go.
I can't believe the difference since then.

I suppose it all does depends on what you use a pc for, if your a gamer or into video editing etc then youd want to update really, if its just internet browsing etc then youll probably be fine.........keeping it virus free of course lol.
The sasser virus came about in around 2004 mate, to be honest it shouldnt effect newer operating systems as it exploited windows xp and 2000, its a worm virus that exploits and spreads via a network port, its actually an out of date virus thats easily sorted by todays virus software.........make sure you update your definitions on a regular basis mate.
