there are system settings on the ps3 that should be visable regardless of the connection
as for your internet connection, you may need to get an upgrade first to version 2.53 or whatever it';s called

Confused the absolute shit out of me then sudeenly it clicked. My TV is a 1080p and his wasn't... Now....There is an 1080p option in the screeen setting in the PS3 set-up. So when i fired the PS3 up at a friends it automatically sent out a 1080P signal (as it's set-up to do that) and my friends telly wasn't compatable and this message appeared. Had to do the scan options over the phone with another PS3 user and gave me instructions on left/right/x/down/down etc etc...
May be your only way to get a proper signal. hth
so plug it into a 1080p telly and get the settings set up right before you plug it into a NON 1080p tely like theone you've go right
mine was set up to whatever jim was using, 568 or something
so i scrolled thruogh to the most i could get
i can put some instructions up for you if no one has when i get back home later this evening

Power on your PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release after the second beep). That'll set it back to 720dp. Then you can go into system settings and do whatever the frig you like.

from memory you have to turn it on (as described) then then press the ps button on the crontroler to get the lights flashing on the controler for it to get allocated to the box
then you sign in as yourself under your user name
then you have to go right to the left hand side of the options menu and the settings are there
