Ok for when Gaz gets back :-
You need to re-start your computer, and hold in the DELETE key until the BIOS screen appears. You will then need to go into one of the menu's in there and look for something about the Boot Sequence. Normally this will be set at something like A, C, CD-ROM or maybe written differently, for example ( Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM).
You need to make sure the firsty boot device is your Floppy drive, and not your hard drive (IDE-0). Then exit the BIOS, saving the changes you have made (if any). Then when the computer starts up it will look in the Floppy Drive for something to Boot up from. It will find the Disc which you're getting from Adam and will ask if you want to start windows with CD-ROM support. Just say go with that and it will spend 30secs or so loading some files and you will end up in DOS with an A: prompt. At this prompt you need to type format C: (assuming your hard drive is labelled C). It will ask if you are sure you want to format, so type Y and it'll do its thing. In about 10-30mins it will finish, and will ask you to type a name for your drive, so type Hard Drive or something like that.
Thats the actual format done. The nex steps depend on which OS you are going to use (ME by the sounds of it) and so IF it boots from the CD as someone above says it does, you need to go back into the BIOS, and change the 1st boot device to your CD-ROM drive, then exit the BIOS, and when the computer re-starts it will find the ME CD to boot from. Then follow all the on-screen instructions and you should end up with ME back on your machine.
You'll need all your motherboard drivers for sound, graphics and modem etc (i presume, never used ME myself).

how about using number 4.... should work? give it a try and see what happens, but DONT do any formatting yet until you are 100% sure that you understand what you are going to have to do.
Are you going to be ok installing the necessary drivers etc and software to get you back online?

Well im out of ideas at the mo... until you can get to a DOS prompt so that you can format your drive, then i cant help. Speak to Jim, maybe he can help cos im knackered now and dont reckon my brain wants to play ball for much longer
Just to clarify though, with the settings in the BIOS doign whatever to get it to seek the floppy drive on startup..... and with the boot disc in that you got from Adam :-
Do you actually hear the floppy drive attempting to read the disk at all?
What do you actually get on screen? Nowt?

hummmm, thats odd. I hope Adam's given you the right thing on disc, cos that almost sounds like what happens when you have a floppy in the drive which isnt bootable, and the system asks you to remove it so that it can try and find something to boot from.

Right chaps, in order for this to work, the bios setting will need to be set to "REMOVABLE DISK", it's saying literally what it means
, save changes and then restart the computer. It will then boot up off the boot disk (which I am assuming is Windows 98, choose the option to Start Computer With Cd-ROM Support, it will load and install cd-rom drivers for you, and tell you that the cd-rom drive will be E:. Type in E: and press enter, and then type in dir and press enter, if a load of files go up, then your fine. If not, then you have problems. Once the cd has been read, type in A: and press enter, then type in format c: and agree to it all, it will then format the drive, once done, type in E: and press enter, then I think you have to type in Stup, and the Windows ME setup should commence and start installing the operating system. Any probs, let me know.
