as said that spec is fine for what you want, it will fly with xp installed
Joris_FRST is right aswell, ive heard people getting a few extras thrown in for free etc by haggling on the phone, so if your not shy it might be worth having a bash

Upgrade the ram to 2 gig, and get an independant graphics card if possible. Onboard graphics use system memory to function.
1 gig ram + internal graphics card of say 128 ram = 872mb system ram only.
1 gig ram + internal graphics card of say 128 ram = 872mb system ram only.
Considering that no mention of game playing was made upgrading to a independent graphics card is not warranted and places ever greater demands on the notorious low performance PSU's placed in Dell systems.
Its worth remembering that Windows XP will actually run in 64 mb and runs in an acceptable manner although slow with 256mb of memory and as such having 500mb of free memory is acceptable for the intended use although 2gigs of memory would offer a nicer user experience, as would 3gb but you have to draw the line and somewhere and this usually effected by the available budget.
A user with small business needs and a bit of web browsing and music has no needs for a after market graphic card simply as they will not be doing heavy graphic intensive tasks thus the demands will never be placed on the graphics card
The X3000 chipset used in the Intel onboard graphics feature Dynamic Video Memory and as such varies the amount of system memory used depending upon the demands placed upon it, it can run in 8mb of memory at times which has minimal system impact while using memory running at 667MHz does have its advantages
Having said that I am a hypocrite as I run 16gb of memory on my system

I use my laptop a hell of a lot less than the desktop pc but that might just be me?
I recently got (though i recon i payed about £50 too much thinking about it now)
Dell Vostro 200 (same case as inspiron but in sexy black)
Intel Conroe 2.33GHz (E6550)
2gig DDR2 RAM
2x 250gig, 7200rpm, Western Digital hard drives
x1300pro 256meg gfx card
7-1 card reader
dvdrw drive
Vista Business
All for £400 to my door, No monitor though. I've seen the same system go for £370 delivered since mind and where i got it from is a bit of a waiting game. Its genuine Dell though.

You'll need to keep checking it each day to see what is available though.
I could have built the same system for about £300. but the way i did it was less hassle, i get a genuine version of a £180 OS, a 1 year warrenty and everything works nicely together since dell spend time matching hardware.
JAmes.
ps. It really is worth getting 2 gig of RAM and an idependent gfx card as mentioned above. Even the crappy one that I got with this machine that i'll be replacing can run HL2 perfectly, UT3 and COD4 - alright if you turn stuff down, and even that new need for speed which is total bollox runs well.

If you genuinly (spl?) have no interest in playing proper games/downloading movies/editing/burning to dvd etc then go for the laptop as like you say you can sit downstairs with Lins and be sociable
You can play games etc on the laptop but i'm guessing not the cutting edge games but then even if you wanted to do that on a desktop it will cost an arm and a leg for the graphics card etc
The link the guy above posted about the dell stuff is a good link as dell are pretty good at all rounders not the best of the best more a jack of all trades
You want absolute minimum...
Core 2 duo processor 2Ghz or higher (quad core is better but costs more)
bare bare minimum of 1gb of memory (i would only have a minimum of 2 but trying to set a cheap example)
If your looking to have Vista then you will need more memory mate as it supposedly struggles with 1gb of memory so if Vista is on the list then go for minimum of 2gb of memory but if funds allow go for 3 or 4 (i think vista 32bit only supports 3.5gb but not 100% sure)
Grahics can be updated at a later date to save costs if you want?
Mart
want to stick to XP pro if im honest Mart
I think ive decided on a desktop just incase i want games...as the Wii is ok but i might want some other games to play on plus i doubt a laptop would hold my 300gb of music?
