Default Office Server

right a few months ago i asked about this and the situation has slightly changed so i'm starting again.

at work i need to setup a server pc that will have all of our files stored to serve around 5 or 6 pcs, needs to run somesort of mail app, so that we can share contacts/calendar items etc through outlook. also ideally needs to be used as an ftp and web server.

basically what do i need for this in the way of software and hardware?

not too up on windows server or exchange but i think it may be the only way, they do look terribly difficult to set up though.

any help is very much appriciated

You're right mate, Exchange is a pain in the tits, especially when it goes wrong.

If all you're sharing is contacts and calendars, Outlook can do that anyway without Exchange.

Grab a copy of MDaemon from alt-n.com for mail services and use Windows' built in IIS for web and FTP services - you can even run older versions of MDaemon on Windows 2000 Professional, no need to fork out Ł500 for a copy of Windows Server

Run Linux, run samba for the filesharing and make it a mailserver... less space, less resources, faster, more stable and less virus prone which is a good quality for a server sharing files and distributing email.
