PC World have a "Maxtor" external USB HDD for £79.99. I bought one, it actually has a Seagate (320gb) 3.5" IDE drive in it

Been fine tho - I ripped the drive out and stuck it in my PC but put an 80gb drive back in the enclosure, and it's been fine, as quick as fook to copy to aswell when using USB2 (under 50secs for a 700mb video file - 1.5gb in under 3mins)

Hello m8,

Have a butchers here for external drives, I would reccommend either a maxtor, western digital, or a seagate. I plan to get 2 x 500 gig drives in the next few months purely for "backup" purposes.

Get a seagate drive - they've never let me down. Maxtor haven't either, but they're kinda 'cheap'. Western Digital have let me down before, and wouldn't recommend them.

Don't get one big drive - hard disks are built to a far lower standard compared to how well they were made 20 years ago - get two of half the capacity you want - this way, if one dies, you'll still (potentially) have half your data in tact. Don't buy two at once from the same supplier, as if the batch they're both from is faulty, they'll both die at once if the unthinkable happens.

Or get two bare drives and stick them in a Netgear SC101.
