Default Checking wireless speeds - how?

I have a 802.11g network at home and have just put a PCI card which is recognised as an Airport card in a Mac G4 with OSX 10.4 - so far as I know, the machine is only capable of 802.11b speeds (11mbs) but the seller assures me it will now be running at 802.11g (54mbs).

During installation and since then t doesn't make any mention of Airport Extreme, which is capable of 54mbs, but only on newer machines.

Is there any way to check the actual transfer rate?

It's not the speed of the download I'm after, it's the speed of the wireless link between the router and the Mac.

It works well enough but, having been told it will do 11g, I'm just nosy about whether it does or not.

Depends on the spec of the router, and the card really, might be options in the router to test speed, and change the settings
