I think you'll be struggling to build something like that for that price. But is it too much?

You could build similar for that price, I would personally use Conroe as a processor base as these Intel Chips are spanking AMD silly in the bang for the buck competition.
Read any of the hardware sites and overclocking sites and the guys wanting a powerfull pc are building with conroe this year !!

Breaking that down into parts:
CPU: FX-62 = £548.62
O/S: Windows XP Media 2005 = £73.09
Case/PSU: £44.64 + £75.48
Motherboard: Asus M2N32-SLi = £122.26
RAM: 2GB DDR2-900 = £230.77
HDDs: 2 * 300GB SATA = £122.68
DVD: Sony dual-layer = £20.77
Graphics: 1GB nVidia 7950GX2 = £316.08
Monitor: 20" Viewsonic TFT = £250.15
Sound: X-Fi Xtreme (OEM) = £56.58
Speakers: Inspire T7900 = £64.27
KB/Mouse: Logitech cordless kb/mouse = £28.61
Total = £1954 (so, all in all, not a bad price considering they've probably used more decent parts than some of the ones I priced there).

Do you think gaming would be better on a PS3 compared to a PC of that spec? I just prefer gaming on a PC and I'm not sure wether to make the switch to console or not

Just been reading loads on the Conroe chips and looks like I'm gonna swing that way ( ooh err ). Only thing is I've been reading about the next gen graphics cards ( DX10 ) coming out by the end of the year
. Where does it all end

. Where does it all end The Sapphire Technology Radeon X1950XTX is probably the best GFX on the market so this will be around for a while yet and has even been rate higher than nVidia 7950GX2 which is 2 GFX cards in one runningin SLi mode, now that some beating.
