Default weird problem

not for me, my father inlaw has got some sort of virus/ad on his pc, it wont let him get on the net.

well i say not on the net, he can get online, msn works but his home page comes up as some virus warning and buy our stuff to remove it.

now his run his nortons, and his adaware, i run them, ive changed the homepage, which saves as home page but it still opens as this other virus type page, it wont let him browes the web, click home and it stays the same, weve tried everything and its stumped me big time, im not real good on computers but ive tried all i can think of.

anyone got any ideas what this is and how to get rid of it without a reformat?

we've tried the restore too but that dont even sort it, even after a bit of fucking about (father inlaw) the pc failed to start up but thats prob due to him switching it off at wall as it wouldnt shut down.

anyone?

If you are running Internet Explorer 6 it could be that someone has hacked it and it keeps on opening on that page everytime now, as far as I can remember norton or adware couldnt remove it, only way that I got rid of it was uninstalling it reinstalling it and getting all the latest security patches.

na his not i dont think mate, vut then again its a oldish machine but he got xp or maybe xp pro on it, er, he dont know what code is if you get my drift so reinstalling windows if thats what ya mean is gunna be hard, and it was a machine i got from work so no software came with it.

i cant even use my windows disc as i havnt got one, never had one from new as it was installed other wise i would of tried it.

thinking about it i havent got a code

anyhow back to it, ill find out the name of it, he got 4 pages worth of instuctions from someone on how to get rid of it, all on about deleting things from the C drive and shit, as i say above i aint not computer wiz so i aint going there incase i delet some drivers or something and fuck it completely

in fact i'll see if he can do a print screen of it and send it me over MSN and ill post it up for all to see.

dunno if it matters or not but he deleted all his cookies and still didnt do anything.

I'd say, the best thing to do is wipe it clean and start again

I had the same problem on XP pro, I believe the virus/worm was called CWS and rewote a registery file that is attached to Internet Explorer 6.

About the reinstallation I mean just removing IE6 and downloading it from the microsoft site with all the latest patches (its free).

You also try downloading Firefox and sending a copy over to him to install via MSN and once installed see if he can get on the web that way, if so then your IE is fooked and you need to uninstall it.
