Default Norton

My computer just told me to uninstall norton antivirus because it would'nt load properly. Now what do i do because if you go to the norton website it wants money which i have already paid ! I have the product key number but i'm guessing i need the program first. P.s norton seems to be more trouble than its worth sometimes

thanx in advance

Regards Daryl

Firstly, uninstall norton and throw it away because its rubbish! as your finding out!

I had similar problems when i had norton and one day it told me it had an error in the programme and it couldnt be fixed so i had to re-install it or something, needless to say i didnt bother what with everyone telling me to delete it!

So yeah uninstall norton completly and then im going to give you a couple of links to some VERY popular FREE anti-virus software and a firewall for good measure.
Anti-virus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 (click on "New recommended program update (AVG 7.1.385)")
thats the lastest version of AVG, when you have installed it hit the "check for updates box".
Firewall: http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

LOADS of people use these free programmes along with me for the last 6months and and im on the net everyday, pc is spot on

Im sure the other regular pc room bofins will back me up here in saying these are good pieces of software

P.s you will/should find your pc runs much better when you have uninstalled norton as its a BIG memory hogging programme!

Let us know how you get on matey

I concur - AVG has been suprb on my machine, and since the Norton that was on my family machine expired, I uninstalled it and installed AVG and that has been fine also!

Norton is indeed poor in terms of system performance and resources but will beat AVG for virus hunting, in fact many well written and renowned pc books mention norton.

AVG is ok if your in a hole for a while but remember that the free adition is just that, free. It is never going to match the paid versions of the big companies. Also remember that any anti virus software will seem good if it doesn't crash and runs fast/smoothly. Its not exactly going to flash up and say, "hey i've just missed a worm/trojan/virus" is it? The best way in hunting for one is to get hold of all the major ones after reading up and then test them and infect yourself. Otherwise result to the reviews if thats not possible.

Even AVG paid version isn't the best but its not bad and better than nothing. Sometimes having the best one on resourses doesn't do the deepest scans or have the best database and update suite. Doing medium level on real time scan and full on on demand scan is advisable.

Kaspersky blows any AVG away. Check quite a few review sites but on this one linked below it gets a silver, AVG gets 8th. Not bad if your a cheapskate though.
