Not critising at all, hindsight is always 20/20, but it does go to show that if money is tight then you need to be even more on top of finding a maintainence schedule that works to minimise expensive failures.
Just lucky it didnt put a leg out of bed, as then it would be block/head/etc as well!
Well done getting the points though, the gamble certainly paid off in this instance, and as per my reply to markk above, I could totally understand why you did it.

Bit of an awkward situation to be in really as the engine was due to get a freshen up for this year, and as you are aware Joe (GS Motosport) is Ron's man in that department, but being a one man band couldn't really afford the time or costs involved i guess, obviously Ron cant really afford big costs either, but we (Ron's mates) do out level best as a TEAM* of friends to do what we can with the tools we have available to us. Just me personally i wish i could fund to help more but obviously i have my own Car/House/Baby/Life to think about also, but as said im sure us as mate's will do as much as we can to get the bottom end built back up for the next round in 5 weeks time (Knock hill)
* Id just like to say a quick thanks too
Dan yap
Chris Roots
Steve (NNM fast) who even picked up and used a few spanners for the top gear rebuild
Barry (Ron's dad)
Twins
John the builder
and
Will (Puss) who actually just hangs around lol
all whom help out with the car

Sorry for the late reply on this.
Bit of a shitter weekend really.
As Doug has said I am racing on a shoestring. If I could have afforded to I would have had the bottom end rebuilt but I couldn't. All looked ok when we inspected the bottom end but you can't put a time on anything can you really.
Fair enough you should build an engine every year. I only wish I could afford to do that!!
I really want to thank every body for their help.
Everybody Doug has thanked.
Also Tony Ryan for taking time to come to the track and giving us pointers on how to run our day. It really helped.
Also importantly Doug!! If it wasn't for you I would have told everybody to pack up and to go
Home so I could sit indoors and sulk!!

And there is absolutely no way you need to rebuild an engine every year. An engine should give many may hours/miles of usage if done correctly.
Ive a friend and his brother racing a Subaru with dual entry over here in sprints and hillclimbs almost every 2-3 weeks and winning their class every time, and also doing very well against full on race cars and open wheel cars.
Same engine for last 3 years, and the oil still remains pretty clean throughout the year.
Build it right, run it in, and there is no reason to have to routinely strip the engine, unless it's pushing 600+ or something daft

And I'm not even racing competitively !! it's just for fun ( I think )
I'm not having a go at you for doing it. Just highlighting that it is incredibly stupid financially lol
My last incident just over 2 years ago probably cost me over 10k. I'm a lot more careful now !

I think Ron is refering to when the bottom end was checked during the off season, not after the spun shell.
I also believe the engine in his car is 8yrs old so has had a good innings to be fair
Edit: beaten to it by Ron himself, lol

stevie , i may be wrong ,
but im assuming that when ronnie says he inspected the motor and everything was ok that was pre engine failiure ,
iirc the motor was pulled out and inspected before it was fitted for oulton as it had a new head gasket ect ,
i could be wrong , but i dont think rons that stupid to assume everythings fine after a spun shell matey ......

Believe me, Ive destroyed engines myself when everything has been telling me to stop. And at very considerable expense !!

I know what your saying stevie, it spun a shell, the crank lobe was not scored up just pitted' as you say tho something had to give we understand that but at this point the damage had already been done, so from our point of view, if we could just clean it all back up get another shell in there, All he had to do was 4 laps, 2 qwally 2 final.. and he had the entire sessions to do them then that's 70 BIG points in the bag.

top effort guys true racer spirit, ignore these people who just dont understand why people race competitvely!!
we were at easter thunderball last year in my mates drag car when it dropped a valve and push rod in qualifying, no worries drive back to his unit from the pod (hour n half) to get the hydralic lifters, rockers and rods from the standard engine but cock it we can only find 15 rods for a v8 needing 16!! no worries, lets put half the engine back to standard and leave the other bank uprated with the solid setup. we built it in a tent borrowing tools from everywhere and left it over night for a morning fire up, we then only fired it to run it up the strip and funnily enough the engine ran and started better than ever but it did destroy the cam!! my mate didnt care tho as he scored points in his first MSA round of the wild bunch and we finished mid field too.
moral of the story, sometimes uv just gotta make the most of it no matter what the cost, i bet some guys in the time attack series have run a car knowing itll kill itself bigger than rons did, ok it could have been a big blow up but weres the fun in packing up and going home and trust me theres something fun about rebuilding at a track and having everyone cheer when you make it onto track
good effort again guys

So in that respect....it actually isnt any fun at all when you have to pay for it. Unless there was big prize money involved, there is no way I'd risk serious damage by continuing to run with a known damaged setup again.
It just is not worth it.

i do need to admit we were looking at a full rebuild for that engine and we did just need to get on the line but still i no if my mates full race engine we have this year had a issue and we could get it on the line at a risk he would take it, its only nuts and bolts at the end of the day, ok expensive nuts and bolts but its what u want it to be aint it. ron wants to race and have fun on track and he is at the end of the day. that engines done its job many times over as ron will admit his foot is heavy lol. i got a feel for this engine in the saph when ron had only done a couple of mods on it and it was fast then!!
the other thing to remember is Ron is still in a R&D stage on this car (suppose all race cars are) so things will break and need uprating over time. another point is the bottom end is fairly standard, im sure if it was all alloy forged bits he would have stopped and gone home, well i no i would lol

I can see both parts of the coin hear, but just stop for a moment and think! what would you have done in this situation? remember all he had to do was four very very slow laps with a lashed together bottom end that would be rebuilt any how..
Would you have gambled for the points?
